Title: Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock
Artist: Leon Hardowar
Reference: Rob Miller
Dimension: 39.5”x27.5”
Status: Sold

Earlier this year, I created a painting of the Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock, a stunning bird endemic to the Guiana Shield. The males are particularly renowned for their vibrant orange crest, striking black plumage, and elaborate courtship rituals.

The inspiration for my artwork came from a photograph shared by the British Ambassador, Her Excellency Jane Miller, which her husband, Rob Miller, took of this majestic bird. I was truly grateful for her gracious permission to use this reference image in my piece.

In my artwork, I sought to capture not only the bird’s physical beauty but also its energy and vitality, set against the lush backdrop of its natural habitat.

I was deeply honored when my painting was purchased by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I through FineArt.gy and subsequently gifted to former President President Bill Clinton by His Excellency President Irfaan Ali. This gesture highlights not only the significance of my work but also underscores the cultural and environmental importance of the Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock to our nation’s eco-tourism. This extraordinary species is one of many that avid bird watchers come to see at the notable Kaieteur Falls.

Unlike many big cats that tend to avoid water, jaguars thrive in habitats near rivers, lakes, and wetlands, particularly throughout Central and South America. They are skilled hunters, preying on a diverse range of aquatic and semi-aquatic animals, including caimans, otters, snakes, fish, and capybaras. Their broad feet, equipped with large pads, enhance their traction, allowing them to navigate effectively through both water and muddy terrain. This unique combination of traits positions jaguars as proficient swimmers and adaptable predators.

You can always count on a caiman to smile, especially when nestled among our national flower, the Victoria lily. This natural nursery provides a safe environment for hatchlings and juvenile animals, offering protection from predators. Spectacled caimans (Caiman crocodilus) exhibit a fascinating behavior known as "nest attendance" or "horticultural care." In this unique display, adult females not only care for their own hatchlings but may also tend to the young of other females. Such cooperative care is rare among reptiles, making it a remarkable aspect of the behavior of spectacled caimans. In contrast, similar horticultural care is less documented and not as prominent in other crocodilian species.
