Currently featured in the 82nd edition of the 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘯𝘦𝘺 𝘉𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘭, 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗨𝗻𝘇𝘂𝗲𝘁𝗮’s fascinating biomorphic drawings share qualities with textiles and sculpture.

Unzueta’s works on paper suffuse the support with natural pigments – including indigo that she first encountered in Guatemala – and tints extracted from berries that Unzueta discovered in a friend’s garden during the pandemic. Seeking a way to present the two-sided drawings in three dimensions, the artist took inspiration from tabletop tent signs used in restaurants.

Presentada actualmente en la 82ª edición de la 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘯𝘦𝘺 𝘉𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘭, los fascinantes dibujos biomórficos de 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗨𝗻𝘇𝘂𝗲𝘁𝗮 comparten cualidades con los textiles y la escultura.

Las obras sobre papel de Unzueta impregnan el soporte con pigmentos naturales —incluyendo el índigo que conoció por primera vez en Guatemala— y tintes extraídos de bayas que Unzueta descubrió en el jardín de una amistad durante la pandemia. Al buscar una forma de presentar los dibujos de dos caras en tres dimensiones, la artista se inspiró en los letreros de mesa tipo “carpa” que se utilizan en los restaurantes.

Congratulations to 𝗘𝗱𝗴𝗮𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗹 for his recently-opened exhibition at the 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗴𝗼’s Bluhm Family Terrace!

In 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘯 𝘔𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦 (𝘐𝘹𝘪𝘮 𝘑𝘶𝘺𝘶 𝘒’𝘢𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘮), Calel presents a hut made from recycled materials, similar to the practical shelters common in the countryside near his home. In Kaqchikel, these huts are called 𝘒’𝘰𝘫𝘢𝘺, which translates to “we have a house” or “we have a future.” Families often place these huts near fields or gardens to store tools, the season’s harvest, and firewood for the colder months—items to sustain life throughout the course of the year.

𝘐𝘹𝘪𝘮 𝘑𝘶𝘺𝘶 𝘒’𝘢𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘮 is curated by 𝗚𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗼𝗹𝗼 𝗕𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗶, Dittmer Associate Curator, Modern and Contemporary Art, and will remain on view through September 13, 2026.

¡Felicidades a 𝗘𝗱𝗴𝗮𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗹 por su exposición recientemente inaugurada en la Bluhm Family Terrace del 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗴𝗼!

En 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘢ñ𝘢 𝘥𝘦 𝘮𝘢í𝘻 𝘥𝘦 𝘭𝘢 𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘢 (𝘐𝘹𝘪𝘮 𝘑𝘶𝘺𝘶 𝘒’𝘢𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘮), Calel presenta una cabaña hecha de materiales reciclados, similar a los refugios prácticos que son comunes en el campo cerca de su casa. En kaqchikel, estas cabañas se llaman 𝘒’𝘰𝘫𝘢𝘺, lo que se traduce como “tenemos una casa” o “tenemos un futuro”. Las familias suelen colocar estas cabañas cerca de campos o jardines para guardar herramientas, la cosecha de la temporada y leña para los meses más fríos—elementos para sustentar la vida a lo largo del año.

𝘐𝘹𝘪𝘮 𝘑𝘶𝘺𝘶 𝘒’𝘢𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘮 fue curada por 𝗚𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗼𝗹𝗼 𝗕𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗶, Curador Asociado Dittmer de Arte Moderno y Contemporáneo, y permanecerá expuesta hasta el 13 de septiembre de 2026.

El sábado pasado, 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗝𝗼𝘀é 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗼 presentó su nueva performance 𝘎𝘈𝘓𝘐𝘓 en 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝘀 𝗨𝗹𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗮. En el texto comisionado para la obra, 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝗷𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀-𝗔𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗿 escribe:

“El Galil conecta geografías y tiempos. En Guatemala, su nombre remite al genocidio maya, a las aldeas arrasadas, a la reorganización militar de la vida comunitaria. En Palestina, remite al presente de una violencia colonial y genocida que destruye casas, hospitales, archivos, campos, familias y condiciones de existencia. Entre ambos territorios circulan armas y doctrinas, pero también una misma pregunta sobre la vida que ciertos poderes soberanos consideran eliminable.

Regina permanece acostada, inmóvil, con la boca abierta llena de municiones de Galil. Esa quietud es una forma de obligarnos a mirar y a escuchar el silencio que queda cada vez que alguien es asesinado por esta geopolítica de la destrucción.”

Méndez Salinas, escritor, editor y gestor cultural reconocido por co-fundar Catafixia Editorial, así como el sello Maíz y Olivo Ediciones, ha sido juramentado como Ministro de Cultura y Deportes. Por su parte, Cazali es una investigadora y curadora con amplia experiencia cultural que asume el cargo de Viceministra de Patrimonio Cultural y Natural. Y Valdés, con una importante trayectoria vinculada al arte contemporáneo, la curaduría y la gestión cultural asume el puesto de Viceministro de Cultura.

¡Celebramos estos nombramientos tan acertados, y les deseamos lo mejor a los tres en esta nueva etapa para ellos y para la cultura de Guatemala!

Méndez Salinas, a writer, editor, and cultural manager recognized for co-founding Catafixia Editorial, as well as the Maíz y Olivo Ediciones label, has been sworn in as Minister of Culture and Sports. For her part, Cazali is a researcher and curator with extensive cultural experience who assumes the position of Vice Minister of Cultural and Natural Heritage. And Valdés, with a significant career linked to contemporary art, curating, and cultural management, takes on the role of Vice Minister of Culture.

We celebrate these very wise appointments, and we wish the three of them the best in this new stage for them and for the culture of Guatemala!

We are delighted to share more images of 𝗡𝗮𝘂𝗳𝘂𝘀 𝗥𝗮𝗺í𝗿𝗲𝘇-𝗙𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗮’s major body of work 𝘓𝘶𝘨𝘢𝘳 𝘥𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘦𝘭𝘰 (𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦); currently on view at ’s Kravis Studio.

𝘓𝘶𝘨𝘢𝘳 𝘥𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘦𝘭𝘰 (2020) is a multipart work that results from the artist’s research into a violently censored student presentation of Hugo Carrillo’s play 𝘌𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘻ó𝘯 𝘥𝘦𝘭 𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘱á𝘫𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘴 (𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘸). Ramírez-Figueroa’s work includes costumes, etchings, watercolors, and a performance of the same name.

The installation at 𝗠𝗼𝗠𝗔 brings together the costumes and props designed for each of the five characters that Naufus and poet 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗼𝗻𝘇á𝗹𝗲𝘇 created as clownish archetypes of despotic power, along with sketches, and documentation of the performance filmed in Guatemala in 2020.

Currently on view at 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗹𝗮𝘀 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗲, 𝗔𝗯𝗯𝗮𝘀 𝗭𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗱𝗶’s solo exhibition 𝘌𝘟/𝘐𝘛: 𝘓𝘐𝘍𝘛 presents a newly commissioned body of work that interrogates bureaucratic systems – administrative, religious, institutional, and militaristic.

Through a series of sound sculptures, some of which sound alarms, whilst others reflect endless rhythms of manual labour or ritual practice; Zahedi explores the capacity of the gallery space to challenge dominant systems through dialogue and collective action.

A programme of events runs throughout the exhibition where works are activated in sequence by the participants. The programme is grounded by a simple but demanding question: 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘳𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘹𝘪𝘵? 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘪𝘵 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘵 𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘪𝘵?

Actualmente en sala en 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗹𝗮𝘀 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗲, la exposición individual de 𝗔𝗯𝗯𝗮𝘀 𝗭𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗱𝗶, 𝘌𝘟/𝘐𝘛: 𝘓𝘐𝘍𝘛, presenta un conjunto de obras recién comisionadas que cuestionan los sistemas burocráticos: administrativos, religiosos, institucionales y militaristas.

A través de una serie de esculturas sonoras —algunas de las cuales emiten alarmas, mientras que otras reflejan ritmos interminables de trabajo manual o prácticas rituales— Zahedi explora la capacidad del espacio de la galería para desafiar los sistemas dominantes mediante el diálogo y la acción colectiva.

In this new commission, Basel and Ruanne ask: what does it mean to resist in impossible conditions, to breathe where one should not breathe, and to emerge from sites of exclusion unbound? Writing, storytelling, and song emerge as life-affirming acts that sustain the capacity to continue resisting, even within conditions designed to confine the body and imagination. Through the sampling and layering of moving image and sound, the pair construct what they describe as “new scripts,” forming a poetics of resistance.

[Bern]

Last few days to see 𝗘𝗱𝗴𝗮𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗹’s solo at 𝗞𝘂𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝗻, which was curated by 𝗜𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗙𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗸𝗶 open from 6 March - 10 May, 2026.

Along with the show’s memorable installation featuring salt mountains and ants made of copper and gold, Calel also presents a series of embroidery paintings that he makes collectively with his family. The embroideries depict images related to community life, traditional agriculture, ancestors, and nature.

Altogether, the works reflect Calel’s concern for the exploitative treatment of land and labor that comes with a never-ending pursuit of profit.

Últimos días para ver la exposición individual de 𝗘𝗱𝗴𝗮𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗹 en la 𝗞𝘂𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝗻, la cual fue curada por 𝗜𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗙𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗸𝗶 y estuvo en sala desde 6 de marzo hasta el 10 de mayo de 202.!

Junto con la memorable instalación con montañas de sal y hormigas hechas de cobre y oro de la exposición, Calel también presenta una serie de pinturas de bordado que realiza colectivamente con su familia. Los bordados representan imágenes relacionadas con la vida comunitaria, la agricultura tradicional, los ancestros y la naturaleza.

En su conjunto, las obras reflejan la preocupación de Calel por el trato explotador de la tierra y el trabajo que conlleva la búsqueda incesante de beneficios económicos.

[Guatemala]

Este sábado, 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗝𝗼𝘀é 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗼 presentará su nueva performance 𝘎𝘈𝘓𝘐𝘓 en 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝘀 𝗨𝗹𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗮, de 14:00 a 15:30 hrs.

El título nombra un fusil de asalto israelí utilizado por el ejército guatemalteco durante el conflicto armado interno. En los años setenta y ochenta, Israel proveyó armas, asesoría, entrenamiento militar y apoyo técnico a un aparato estatal que ejecutó una guerra contrainsurgente contra la población civil, en su mayoría indígena. En la performance de Regina, Palestina y Guatemala aparecen unidas por una trayectoria material de destructividad expuesta en las municiones del Galil.

This Saturday, 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗝𝗼𝘀é 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗼 will present her new performance 𝘎𝘈𝘓𝘐𝘓 at 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝘀 𝗨𝗹𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗮, from 2pm to 3:30pm.

The title names an Israeli assault rifle used by the Guatemalan army during the internal armed conflict. In the 1970s and 1980s, Israel provided weapons, advice, military training, and technical support to a state apparatus that executed a counterinsurgency war against the civilian population, which was mostly indigenous. In Regina’s performance, Palestine and Guatemala appear united by a material trajectory of destructiveness exposed in the Galil ammunition.

Big congratulations to Johanna Unzueto for the opening of 𝘔𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘭𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘯𝘨, her solo exhibition at 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗮 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗼, curated by 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗕𝗿𝘆𝗮𝗻-𝗪𝗶𝗹𝘀𝗼𝗻.

For the exhibition, Unzueta has created a site-specific installation with fabric pipes that takes into consideration the unique challenges of Venice as a “miracle of plumbing” in which water, bodies, and resources are channeled and redirected. Seeing her cloth pipes together with her drawings showcases the artist’s interest in everyday feats of engineering across human and non-human realms.

Installed at Galleria Finley, 𝘔𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘭𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘯𝘨 is open to the public Thursdays and Saturdays from 2 pm to 6 pm, and will remain on view through July 18.

Muchas felicidades a Johanna Unzueta por la inauguración de 𝘔𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘭𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘯𝘨 (𝘔𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘴 𝘥𝘦 𝘭𝘢 𝘧𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘳í𝘢), su exposición individual en 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗮 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗼, curada por 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗕𝗿𝘆𝗮𝗻-𝗪𝗶𝗹𝘀𝗼𝗻.

Para la muestra, Unzueta ha creado una instalación in situ con tuberías de tela que toma en cuenta los desafíos únicos de Venecia como un “milagro de la fontanería” en el que agua, cuerpos y recursos son canalizados y redirigidos. Ver sus cañerías de tela junto a sus dibujos muestra el interés de la artista en las proezas cotidianas de la ingeniería a través de los ámbitos humanos y no humanos.

Instalada en la Galleria Finley, 𝘔𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘭𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘯𝘨 está abierta al público los jueves y sábados de 14:00 a 18:00 horas, y permanecerá en exhibición hasta el 18 de julio.
