“Handcrafted limestone and ash from various trees and plants also appear in the works in the form of glazes, shaping surfaces that evoke both the colour spectrum of grafting stages–from deep greens to browns–and the textures of trunks, branches, and foliage. The same materials thus migrate from soil and plants into the works of the exhibition, alluding to processes of protection and regeneration.”

“Χειροποίητος ασβεστόλιθος και στάχτη από διάφορα δέντρα και φυτά, εμφανίζονται επίσης στα έργα με τη μορφή γυαλωμάτων, που προσεγγίζουν τόσο τα χρώματα στα στάδια του μπολιάσματος, από τα σκούρα πράσινα και τα καφέ, όσο και τις υφές κορμών, κλαδιών και φυλλωμάτων. Τα ίδια υλικά μετακινούνται έτσι από το έδαφος και τα φυτά στα έργα της έκθεσης, παραπέμποντας σε λειτουργίες προστασίας και αναγέννησης.”

“The unseen life of plants–the continuous processes that secretly take place while remaining fully exposed to their environment–offers the exhibition its title. 'And Here I Bloom, For a Short Hour Unseen', an excerpt from a poem by the American naturalist writer, Henry David Thoreau, in which he reflects on the complexity and vulnerability of human existence. [...] As in grafting, even after a part of a plant has been separated from its roots, so in the human condition, the possibility of flowering in new conditions remains.

The life cycle of plants, as well as grafting, could not occur without one essential element: sunlight. Wall-mounted sconces made of clay and copper, porcelain and metal, evoke light as the force that activates plants and makes all their functions possible. Similarly, in the exhibition they operate as carriers of vitality, transforming the space throughout the different hours of the day.”

"Το αθέατο των φυτών–οι συνεχείς λειτουργίες που συμβαίνουν κρυφά, αλλά ταυτόχρονα εκτεθειμένα στο περιβάλλον τους–δίνει τον τίτλο στην έκθεση 'And Here I Bloom, For a Short Hour Unseen' («και εδώ ανθίζω, για μια σύντομη ώρα απαρατήρητο»), από ποίημα του Αμερικανού νατουραλιστή συγγραφέα, Henry David Thoreau, όπου προσεγγίζει την πολυπλοκότητα και την ευαλωτότητα της ανθρώπινης ύπαρξης. [...] Όπως στο μπόλιασμα, ακόμη και μετά την απομάκρυνση ενός μέρος του φυτού από τις ρίζες του, έτσι και στην ανθρώπινη κατάσταση, παραμένει η πιθανότητα άνθισης μέσα σε νέες συνθήκες.

Ο κύκλος ζωής των φυτών, όπως και η διαδικασία του μπολιάσματος, δεν θα μπορούσε να υπάρξει χωρίς ένα βασικό στοιχείο: το φως του Ήλιου. Επιτοίχιες απλίκες από πηλό και χαλκό, πορσελάνη και μέταλλο, παραπέμπουν στο φως, που ενεργοποιεί τα φυτά και καθιστά δυνατές όλες τις λειτουργίες τους. Αντίστοιχα, στην έκθεση λειτουργούν ως φορείς που προσφέρουν τη ζωτικότητα, μεταμορφώνοντας τον εκθεσιακό χώρο μέσα στις διαφορετικές ώρες της ημέρας."

Introducing Bregje Sliepenbeek , as we begin this year’s Artist Residency Programme at The Paddocks.

Bregje Sliepenbeek (b. 1986, Breda, The Netherlands) is a visual artist working across sculpture and installation. Central to her practice is the tension between fragility and strength, the organic and the industrial, the soft and the hard.

Drawing inspiration from nature–where greenery persistently finds its way back, piercing through concrete, steel, and asphalt regardless of how tightly controlled–Sliepenbeek transforms industrial materials into flowing organic forms that expand, entangle, and break free. Working primarily with aluminium and metal, her process embodies this duality: the physically demanding act of deforming metal set against the quiet concentration of detailed craftsmanship.

She is a graduate of the Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam. She lives and works in Amsterdam.

Με χαρά καλωσορίζουμε την Bregje Sliepenbeek , εκκινώντας το Πρόγραμμα Φιλοξενίας Καλλιτεχνών του The Paddocks για το 2026. ✨

Η Bregje Sliepenbeek (γ. 1986, Breda, Ολλανδία) είναι εικαστικός, απόφοιτος της Ακαδημίας Rietveld, Άμστερνταμ, και ασχολείται με τη γλυπτική και τις εγκαταστάσεις. Η πρακτική της εστιάζει στην αντίθεση μεταξύ του οργανικού και του βιομηχανικού, του εύθραυστου και του άκαμπτου.

Αντλώντας έμπνευση από τη φύση–που βρίσκει πάντα τρόπο να επιστρέφει, διαπερνώντας το τσιμέντο, το ατσάλι και την άσφαλτο, ανεξάρτητα από το πόσο αυστηρά ελέγχεται–η Sliepenbeek μεταμορφώνει βιομηχανικά υλικά σε ρευστές οργανικές μορφές που επεκτείνονται, περιπλέκονται και τελικά απελευθερώνονται. Δουλεύοντας σχεδόν αποκλειστικά με το αλουμίνιο και το μέταλλο, η πρακτική της ενσωματώνει αυτή τη διττότητα: την απαιτητική για το σώμα διαδικασία της παραμόρφωσης του μετάλλου έναντι της λεπτομερούς χειροτεχνίας.

Ζει και εργάζεται στο Άμστερνταμ, Ολλανδία.

“In nature, when two trees come close to one another, they can bind their roots and organically merge. From the ancient orchards of Asia to contemporary gardens, through human intervention and skilled care, grafting has evolved into a widespread gardening and agricultural practice–one plant is joined to another allowing them to heal and grow as one. One part offers the trunk and roots, the other brings the capacity to transform. Bound together in close contact, they co-create a common entity capable of producing stems, flowers, and fruit. The exhibition And Here I Bloom, For a Short Hour explores grafting as a form of union through which new identities emerge. Used metaphorically, it serves as a point of departure for a creative dialogue between Kotoula and Moschou.”

"Όταν στη φύση δύο δέντρα πλησιάσουν το ένα το άλλο, έχουν την ικανότητα να προσδέσουν τις ρίζες τους και οργανικά να ενωθούν. Από τους αρχαίους οπωρώνες της Ασίας έως τους σύγχρονους κήπους, με ανθρώπινη ενέργεια και έντεχνη φροντίδα, το μπόλιασμα (εμβολιασμός) εξελίχθηκε σε μια διαδεδομένη τεχνική κηπουρικής και καλλιεργητικής, κατά την οποία ένα φυτό ενώνεται με ένα άλλο, ώστε να επουλωθούν και να αναπτυχθούν μαζί ως ένα. Το ένα μέρος προσφέρει τον κορμό και τις ρίζες, το άλλο φέρει την ικανότητα της μεταμόρφωσης. Σε συνθήκη στενής επαφής, συνδιαμορφώνουν μια κοινή οντότητα, ικανή να παράγει βλαστούς, άνθη, καρπούς. Grafting is a common gardening technique in which one plant is joined to another so they heal and grow as one. One part offers the trunk and roots, the other brings the capacity to transform. Bound together in close contact, they generate a new entity to produce stems, flowers, and fruit.

‘And Here I Bloom, For a Short Hour Unseen’ explores grafting as a form of union through which new identities emerge. Used metaphorically, it serves as a point of departure for Kotoula and Moschou. By merging their individual artistic practices—ceramics, drawing, photography, and sculpture—the exhibition presents a new body of collaborative work developed between the two artists, stemming from Moschou’s residency at The Paddocks in 2025.

Η έκθεση «And Here I Bloom, For a Short Hour Unseen» προσεγγίζει μεταφορικά την έννοια του μπολιάσματος ως ένωσης, μέσα από την οποία παράγονται νέες ταυτότητες, αποτελώντας αφετηρία για τις Κοτούλα και Μόσχου. Final week to visit ‘Reflections’, a solo exhibition by Cyrus Mahboubian, until this Saturday 25 April. 💫 Don’t miss your chance to view a brilliant new series of unique Polaroid compositions created in Mount Pelion, the English countryside and further afield.

In contrast to the accelerated circulation of images today, Mahboubian’s practice unfolds through a slower process of walking, observing, and assembling, where separate moments and locations converge and landscape becomes both subject and method for reflection.
