Some moments stay with you. This was definitely one of them. ❤️
Last May, we had the joy of bringing a room full of ancient Greek lyres to the Musical Instruments Museum (MIM) Mimbrussels in Brussels.
But the idea was not simply to talk about the lyre or demonstrate it. Everyone had an instrument in their hands.
Together with Lina Palera Lina Palera and Theodore Koumartzis Theodoros Koumartzis, we explored how the ancient Greek lyre works, how it feels to play it and, step by step, learned the Epitaph of Seikilos, the oldest complete surviving musical composition from the ancient Greek world.
Seeing so many people playing these instruments together, inside a museum dedicated to musical instruments from across the world, was something really special.
For us, this is what bringing ancient music back to life means: not only preserving these instruments behind glass, but putting them back into people's hands and allowing them to make music again.
