Loutro – Late September Week - If We Possibly Can…

Apologies for the long delay and to those who have been waiting for further details. It has been a confusing and disorientating time for everyone, but I think about now is the time to hope we might run the 3rd week of the June programme in late September. Firstly the details :

Loutro - Sun Sept 27 – Sat Oct 03, 2020

Poetry Intensive – with Kathryn Maris & Maurice Riordan

Writing Intensive – with Jemma Kennedy & David Swann

The original June 3 week was almost full but, as the new timings do not work for everyone. a few places have become available for anyone where the June dates were inconvenient.

A lot of things have to go our way for this to happen. First of all being allowed into Greece, and secondly not having to quarantine on return. Who knows ? But if the Oxford or any other vaccine works, it’s a game changer. And the widely available steroid dexamethasone has just been announced today as a life saver in intensive care. Who knows ? But, if we possibly can, we’ll make some Writing Courses happen in Loutro in September.

I have spoken to Giorgos from Ilios this week and Loutro is slowly cranking back into action, sounds a bit like April in June. They expect to start the road back to normality from next week onwards.

NOT TO BOOK FLIGHTS YET - Tempting as it may be, with great flight price offers, we cannot confirm the courses will go ahead until the confirmation dates above.

Deposits – on hold, for all those who have already placed deposits. Documentation follows.

TRAVEL INFORMATION – many changes to the Chania flight schedules. BA have flights on Saturdays & Sundays from Heathrow. Easyjet now have an extra early Saturday afternoon schedule from Gatwick (early Saturday evening return). Ryanair have a Sunday pm return flight to Stansted, but seem to have cancelled their Leeds Bradford and Birmingham flights, East Midlands and Manchester being the alternatives. If so, a couple of practical points :

Holy Spirit Monday - June 17 - a national holiday in Greece means that Loutro can be booked out over the June 15-17 weekend. Therefore, we are advising all those considering courses in the June 08/09-15/16 & June 15/16-22/23 weeks to book reasonably soon, with a view to accommodation being reserved by early December.

Travel Information 2019 - now updated on the Loutro website page with the 2019 flight schedules Flights to Chania on ryanair & easyjet (to June 23) are now bookable. easyjet prices increase more or less straight line slowly upwards between now and June ryanair prices vary with demand and can go up or down

LOUTRO 18 - FLIGHTS - EARLY BOOKING

JUNE 2018 PROGRAMME : www.espirita.org.uk

LOUTRO FLIGHTS : a little complicated at £40-£60 more than last year, but bargains are still to be had. If on a tight budget, prepare to be flexible. Cheaper flights are available on weekday dates, if your schedule enables you to take them.

RYANAIR : there are well priced flights earlier in the month from Manchester, Stansted & Bristol. We will do our best to work with clients that decide on the Stansted Friday flights, returning on the Monday flights 10 days later
EASYJET : uppish prices, so either pay for the flights you want, or if you are time flexible, then the difference in flight prices on different days may well pay for the extra nights in Loutro.
For example, Gatwick - Chania return Mon July 02 is £162 but on Wed July 03 it's £103. For a couple, this difference would pay for the room and the food for the two extra days on Crete

Loutro Documentary - Now Free View

For those not in touch with Espirita by email :

Just to let you know that 'Sfakia', the film about Loutro and the surrounding area, is now free to view on stream at the Inspirita website above, together with the rest of the World Spirit / Inspirita documentary library ( 2001-2015 ).

The timing of the film in 2007 proved to be of the essence, in that it managed to document the characters in Loutro that were at the heart of the passage of Loutro from the former small fishing village to the Loutro we see today. Sadly some of those characters are no longer with us.

In line with current conventions, the films are preceded by a one minute promo for not for profit travel outfit, Espirita. As you already know about Espirita, the promo can be skipped by clicking the cursor to the actual film.

OF LEONARD

In a small Buddhist temple, amongst the shops, schools and apartment blocks of an ordinary town on the outskirts of Kyoto, lies the final resting place of the great Japanese poet, Basho.
Even now, over three hundred years since his death, the wit and beauty of Basho's words still draws to the temple a steady trickle of admirers, muses, scribes, searchers……...

Wherever it might happen to be and in whatever form, one very much hopes that in centuries to come, poets, singers, writers, searchers, so moved and inspired by the mystical beauty of Leonard's songs, will make their way to Leonard's final abode, echoing the thoughts of one recent visitor to Basho's stone :

Monday to Friday Courses - As circularised, increasing flight services to Chania now make possible Monday to Friday courses . Orientation dinners are on the Sunday evenings before Course, and the Readings dinners are on Friday evenings. The arrival and departure days for Course are now on Saturdays & Sundays

Course & Retreat Fees - Course + Room + Food = £650 - £750
Due to upward pressure on costs, there has been a slight increase in fees. It is hoped that these fee levels will hold for the next 2-3 years :
Courses - £320 / Retreats - £360

Transfers - As our secondary transfer costs are comparable to those involved in getting to other secluded writing course venues, the extra cost in getting to Loutro is the difference between an air fare and a train fare.

Flights - £125-£250 - should not be booked without confirming Course or Retreat availability.
