I must have passed this statue a hundred times, but today it caught my attention that the torsos seem shaped for corsetry. even down to the ridge around the hips. They are undeniably formed in the mores of the post war world, expressing the strength, resilience, and upright pride of a city recovering from the Blitz .

The figures have both a fleshy weight and a bony rigidity, and in the elongated ‘corseted’ bodies I see and echo of Elizabeth I, and the bodices worn by the princess, soon to be Elizabeth II.

Latest charity shop find that gives me delight - I have no need for 1980s stuff at the moment, but I couldn’t possibly leave it there could I?...£4 invested wisely.

Ever been grateful to these humble little mending kits?

I always kept one in my purse but could never envisage a moment where I would need to sew and not have at least SOME proper stuff around me.

Just moving digs, with everything gone, meant I was rendered helpless in the face of a simple missing button…and I could not be more grateful to the people who put these tiny treasures together!

Little tool with a big job to do.

Pinking is always approached with trepidation - it’s a one way street, and the mantra ‘check twice, cut once’ is always in my head. But once you get going it’s like a beautiful dance, locked into a rhythm with all your senses open and receptive.

Please consider helping this organisation, with any donation, however small. I was lucky enough to meet them a couple of weeks ago when I brought them sewing stuffs to help with their ‘normal’ work, providing classes to teach refugees (and Greeks who are in need) the language and skills that can help them to be self sufficient.

But this is not their only work. Fresh from dealing with the aftermath of the earthquake in Turkey, they are now addressing the need created by the horrifying fires in the current heatwave. These are wonderful, generous souls, but they can do most good if we all help.

I was fascinated to see these silver prayer tokens in chapel at the Arkadi Monastery, each carrying an image as the focus of the prayer in much the same way as the ancient votive offerings in the Heraklion Archaeological museum.

Not much changes in the specificity of how we ask for help it seems.

Many of the vestments at the Arkadi Monastery are stiffened with paper, and during conservation these were found to be early printed and manuscript pieces, from the early seventeenth century.

Fragments were found from letters, books of prayers and exorcisms, and Greek codices.

The reuse of early texts was not unusual, and as well as stiffening for clothing, they were turned into binding support for new printed books, and even, rather sadly, toilet paper. It makes me wonder where such treasures may still be hiding.

I like the idea of these C18th monks taking a pride in their work, and having their skills acknowledged in the embroidery itself on the liturgical vestments in the Arkadi Monastery, Crete.
One piece was even dedicated to the memory of an earlier monk embroiderer.

The embroidered curse on anyone who removed the garment from the monastery does seem a little unchristian though.

Seeing such well known images in person for the first time is always exciting. These figures from Knossos are stunning and have revived my childhood fascination with life in the ancient world.

Going through old pre-digital photographs recently, I found this coronation robe, made I think for the Tower of London in 2002. Over the years I have made several coronation garments for museums, often child-sized for visitors to dress up, which is testament to the ongoing fascination of the public with the idea and accoutrements of monarchy.

Watching this weekend the abundance of cloth of gold, I was struck that it still has the ability to enthral. Today there is sparkle and glitter on garments across society, but when these robes were first stitched they would have been in dynamic contrast to the clothing available to the general public.

With so much hardship in the country, there might seem an incongruity in such display, even though these are old garments being reused. Some have been very critical of others who look beyond their own situation and find distraction in the glamour of royalty. It might be better, perhaps, to seek to understand why and how this gives comfort. Bread and circuses perhaps?
