Η συλλογή του Ζαχαρία Πορταλάκη περιλαμβάνει έργα ζωγραφικής, γλυπτικής και φωτογραφίας καλλιτεχνών, που έδρασαν από την περίοδο μετά τον πόλεμο μέχρι σήμερα. Άρχισε να δημιουργείται το 1987 κυρίως με Έλληνες καλλιτέχνες, που ήδη είχαν γράψει ιστορία στον εικαστικό χώρο, συνέχισε με Έλληνες της διασποράς και από το 1991 με Ευρωπαίους και Αμερικανούς καλλιτέχνες. Βασικό κορμό της συλλογής αποτελεί

ο Θεόδωρος Στάμος, μια από τις μεγαλύτερες συλλογές έργων του καλλιτέχνη, που περιλαμβάνει έργα αφηρημένου εξπρεσιονισμού από το 1945 έως το 1994.

Η διαμόρφωση μιας αξιόλογης συλλογής έργων τέχνης σε συνδυασμό με την ανάγκη του συλλέκτη να μοιραστεί τα έργα αυτά με το κοινό τον ώθησε στη δημιουργία της «ΣΥΛΛΟΓΗΣ ΠΟΡΤΑΛΑΚΗ». Αυτή η συλλογή, που αποτελείται και αριθμεί σήμερα περισσότερα από 800 έργα, θεωρείται μια από τις μεγαλύτερες της σύγχρονης ελληνικής τέχνης.

Έργα της συλλογής παρουσιάστηκαν περιοδικά σε ατομικές ή ομαδικές εκθέσεις, με ελεύθερη είσοδο, στον εκθεσιακό χώρο της Πεσματζόγλου 8, από το 1998 έως το 2010. Από τον Οκτώβριο του 2015 το Ιστορικό Μουσείο Κρήτης φιλοξένησε 2 ακόμη εκθέσεις, δίπλα στη μόνιμη έκθεση του σημαντικού συνόλου εξήντα πέντε φορητών εικόνων (15ου - αρχών 20ού αι.) που δωρήθηκαν από τον Ζαχαρία Πορταλάκη στην Εταιρία Κρητικών Ιστορικών Μελετών.

Τον Μάρτιο του 2018 θα εγκαινιαστεί στο Ιστορικό Μουσείο Κρήτης η έκθεση ζωγραφικής με πίνακες του Έλληνα καλλιτέχνη Διαμαντή Διαμαντόπουλου (1914 - 1995).

The Zacharias Portalakis Collection includes works of art (painting, sculpture and photography) by artists active in the post-war period up until the present time. The collection began to be formed in 1987 with works by Greek artists who had already made their mark in the visual arts in Greece, was further enriched later on with works by Greek artists living abroad and since 1991 with selected works by European and American artists. A major part of the collection consists of the works by the abstract expressionist Stamos, which is one of the largest collections of the artist’s oeuvre with paintings spanning the period 1945 - 1994. The Zacharias Portalakis Collection numbers today more than 800 artworks, and is considered to be one of the largest in size and most important contemporary art collections in Greece. The importance of the collection and the collector’s desire to share these works with a wider audience, led the collector to the founding of the “PORTALAKIS COLLECTION Exhibition Space” (Pesmatzoglou Street 8 at the center of Athens), where temporary solo or group exhibitions had been held from 1998 to 2010, with free admission to the public. Since October 2015, the Historical Museum of Crete (Heraklion) has hosted two more temporary exhibitions, showcased next to the permanent collection of sixty five post-Byzantine portable icons (15th - early 20th c.) donated to the Society of Cretan Historical Studies by Zacharias Portalakis. In March 2018, a new exhibition will be inaugurated at the Historical Museum of Crete, now focusing on the lesser known paintings of the Greek artist Diamantis Diamantopoulos (1914 - 1995).
