The Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies at Athens is very pleased to share the next chapter of its initiative “Sharing Ancient Irish Heritage with the Irish Diaspora in Greece”, a series of open public lectures on Irish archaeology, which will run throughout May under the overarching theme “Layers of Ireland”.

In the second talk, Dr Ros Ó Maoldúin, Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland, will present on “Treasures of the Burren: Prehistoric tombs and Ancient DNA.” The lecture will take place in hybrid form on Thursday, 14 May, at 7pm.

Few landscapes in Ireland hold as many secrets as the Burren. In this talk, Dr Ó Maoldúin takes us on a vivid journey through one of Europe’s most remarkable prehistoric landscapes, a vast limestone karst on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic coast, where archaeological remains have survived for thousands of years.

The Burren’s particular geology has earned it UNESCO Geopark status — but on its iconic limestone pavements, there also lies an archaeological treasure trove of megalithic tombs and settlement traces. The same stone that shaped this landscape also preserved the bones of the people who lived on it, with profound implications for modern science. Human remains recovered here are among the best-preserved in Ireland and researchers have successfully extracted ancient DNA from these bones, opening a remarkable window onto the lives, movements, and relationships of people who lived here thousands of years ago.

Dr Ó Maoldúin brings this story to life through his own excavations: three Chalcolithic megalithic tombs, a barrow, and several prehistoric hut sites, all uncovered in this extraordinary landscape. Illustrated with photographs from the field, this talk offers a first-hand account of discovery at the intersection of archaeology and cutting-edge genetic science.

A talk for anyone fascinated by prehistoric Ireland, ancient people, and the science that is rewriting our understanding of both.

Explore Ancient Art from Ireland’s Stone Age with Dr Clare Tuffy, former manager at Brú na Bóinne!

This family workshop offers a hands-on way to explore the mysterious art left by stone age farming communities in Ireland over 5,000 years ago.

Megalithic art is primarily abstract, consisting of geometric designs carved into rock. It is found on the structural stones of ancient tombs but can also be found on standing stones and natural boulders.

How was this art applied to the stones without metal tools?

What does it look like? What might it have meant?

Workshop activities
* Discover ancient art from Ireland’s best known prehistoric sites
* Use your imagination to decorate a tomb with megalithic designs
* Try your hand at stone age maths
* Get a realistic temporary tattoo incorporating Neolithic designs (safe, non-toxic and pain free)!
* Learn a traditional Irish children’s song at the end

Sunday, 10 May, 12 noon, at the IIHSA (located near the Kallimarmaro at Agras 23)

To attend, please register by email: [email protected]

This Thursday, the Greek-Irish Society will gather at the James Joyce to support the Irish football team in what is their most important game in years.

A win versus the Czech Republic would secure Ireland a place in Sunday’s World Cup play-off final.

We will be hoping Irish stars such as Troy Parrott and Caoimhín Kelleher will give us a night to remember. Come on you Boys in Green!

Our friends in the Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies at Athens - IIHSA are launching a new initiative this month called Sharing Ancient Irish Heritage with the Irish Diaspora in Greece”.

The first even in this initiative will be a lecture on “Visualising the Cult of St Brigid of Ireland" by Dr Rachel Moss of Trinity College Dublin.

The talk will take place at the IIHSA premises (and online) on Thursday, 26 March 2026, at 7pm. It will be followed by a wine reception.

Summary of talk : Brigid of Ireland occupies a central position in the religious, cultural, and artistic landscape of the medieval world. As both pagan goddess and early Christian saint, she occupies a syncretic role similar to several ancient Greek goddesses, an aspect of her that has seen the revival of her popularity today as an icon of female empowerment. This talk examines the medieval art and architecture associated with St Brigid and how it reflected her character as the female national saint. It will look at the impact of her cult in Ireland, but also the spread of its influence across the continent through buildings and artworks dedicated to her memory.
