“We reached Monemvasia at midnight; waves were breaking at my feet, and a huge, menacing mass, silent and without light, appeared resting on the sea. The priest who had come with me in the dilapidated car crossed himself. ‘Ayia Sophia,’ he said, pointing out the rock. ‘At the peak of Monemvasia is the Ayia Sophia, great be her grace.... Day was breaking as I crossed the narrow strand, the moni emvasis (single entrance), that joins the precipitous rock of Monemvasia with the mainland. I moved on, gazing at the proud rock, not tiring of it. Until now I thought that the finest thing I had seen in Morea was the fortress of Karytaina. But how much more savage, imperious and isolated is this hulk of granite (sic), this Gibraltar of Greece!” - Nikos Kazantzakis, 1937

The celebration of Panaghia Chrissafitissa, 8 days after Easter. The procession is for the icon of Panaghia Chrissafitissa, which, according to tradition, kept disappearing from its original location in a village called Chrissafa and appearing in Monemvasia, indicating that it was her wish to stay there instead.
