When I was studying, there was very little access to performance training in Greece—especially in relation to site-specific practices. At the time, going abroad felt almost necessary.
Things have shifted since then. .nikolopoulou has contributed significantly to the development of performance training in Greece, including through her work at the National Theatre and beyond. The field feels more open now.
At the same time, access is still uneven. Travelling isn’t always possible, and international exchange can remain limited.
This is one of the reasons we started the Kaiafas Performance Residency together.

It creates a space in Greece where artists can work within an international context—meeting practitioners from different backgrounds and engaging in interdisciplinary exchange. It also comes from a long-standing desire to develop an intensive programme in dialogue with a natural landscape.

Kaiafas felt like the right place for this.

The residency unfolds over four days, focusing on site-specific performance and live art.
Working within a Natura 2000 protected landscape, the programme engages place as something that actively shapes the work.

Structured around four axes — body, natural landscape, movement, time — the process develops through embodied practices, spatial research, and collective work.

We’ve already received a strong number of applications, and we’re still accepting until 15 May 2026.

Last summer we witnessed, once again, a great fire tearing through Kythera—burning nearly a tenth of the island, leaving behind a landscape marked not only by loss, but by a fragile potential for transformation. What remains is a terrain charged with memory, where matter, time, and presence begin to shift.

Moved by this event and the altered, fire-marked terrain, we created a series of in situ Butoh dance works, later transformed through the language of video dance.

We are excited to share that our video dance is premiering today in Riga, Latvia, as part of Scent Art Festival.

This video documents a dance performance created in the burned landscape of Kythera, Greece, with four dancers and one musician. Through Butoh, the body becomes a site of transformation—not expressing, but undergoing the landscape. Filmed in the scorched terrain near Myrtidia, the work unfolds as a quiet ritual.

Ash, soil, and silence shape the movement, while live music creates an improvisational dialogue between body and environment. Movement emerges from the in-between space—the Ma of Butoh—where form appears and dissolves. The body becomes a site of transmission; movement, a form of communication.

The dancers do not represent the landscape. They enter it. Through breath, stillness, and minimal gesture, the body becomes a carrier of memory, tracing a passage between loss and regeneration.

Improvised music by Thodoris Ziarkas (double bass and lyre) unfolds in dialogue with the dancers and the landscape, linking rhythm, sound, and physical gesture. Butoh opens passages between states: human and vegetal, loss and continuity, silence and sound, the formless and form.

The screening will be accompanied by a small scent performative ritual, extending the work into the atmospheric and the unseen. A custom-crafted scent is presented, developed in a perfumery context—combining notes of burnt trees and scorched land with selected aromas from local botanicals of Kythera.

Part of Scent Art Festival (May 6–10), an international gathering of artists and researchers engaging scent as a medium of contemporary art and multi sensory thinking.

Let’s Inject Some Randomness into the City:

What happens when performance steps into everyday life?

Over the years, I’ve been creating site-specific works in public spaces — from a quiet breakfast during rush hour on London Bridge, to collective screams in Oxford Circus, to reflecting on digital life in Prague. Each project explores unpredictability, chance, and the possibility of real encounters with passers-by.

I’m happy to share that this work is now part of the Proceedings of the Performing Space 2025 Conference, organised by wonderful Pablo Berzal Atenas, where I contributed both a presentation and a published paper.
