Transition to 8

Transition to 8 A project bridging technology, psychology, electronic music & digital arts to raise social awareness.

• What are our reactions when confronted with pressing social issues?
• How does technology capture and convert human reactions into digital data?
• How can human experience be transformed into works of contemporary artistic creation? The 'Transition to 8' project aims to raise awareness about important social issues and to inspire large social groups to recognize what they have in common. Transit

ion to 8 employs information and communication technologies, sociopsychology, electronic music, and digital arts to redefine the relationship of art with society and lay the groundwork for a new approach to future festivals through a cross-sectoral approach that combines contemporary artistic creation with the humanities, research, and innovation.

𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀 #𝟭 | 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟴

Through the Back to Basics series we will revisit the project’s core ideas and vocabulary, where they come from, what they mean, and how they shape the way we work across art, community participation, and environmental awareness. Each post focuses on one key concept, offering a clear insight into the thinking behind Transition to 8.

So… why 8?

In Transition to 8, the number isn’t decorative. It carries the logic of the project. The main idea is to create a recurring cultural framework (imagined as a periodic music festival) that could support awareness, participation, and shared understanding around urgent social issues, from environmental destruction and inequality to discrimination, displacement, and other realities that shape everyday life.

At the heart of this approach is sociodrama: a participatory process where people from different social groups step into dialogue, negotiate perspectives, and explore possible responses to what they are living through.

Within this project design, these discussions were organised across seven levels/axes. And that’s where symbolism around the number 8 enters: 7 is deeply rooted in collective human imagination, the seven natural notes of music, the seven colours of the spectrum, the seven days of the week, the seven energy centres (chakras). Again and again, seven appears as a system, a distinct structure that humans use to understand or interpret the world.

8 is what comes next.

Good Practices Guide Spotlight #1: Community Activation through Bodystorming and Sociodrama

How do we turn complex social issues like air pollution into shared experience, collective dialogue, and meaningful cultural participation? In this capacity building session led by the Laboratory for Qualitative Research in Psychology and Psychosocial Well-Being of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Εργαστήριο Ποιοτικής Έρευνας στην Ψυχολογία και την Ψυχική Υγεία) and MENTOR in culture, partners explored the TT8 methodology of bodystorming and sociodrama as practical tools for community engagement in cultural projects.

Key learnings captured in the TT8 Good Practices Guide include:
• How to design safe and inclusive participatory settings for diverse communities
• How to facilitate embodied processes that translate lived experience into insights
• How to activate audiences as co-creators rather than spectators
• How to document and reflect on participatory processes in ways that support later artistic production

These practices strengthen the link between communities, research, and artistic creation, forming a reusable method for future projects.

Introducing our Capacity Building Results Series

At the start of TT8: European Societies in Flux, project partners, experts, and cultural practitioners came together to exchange knowledge and strengthen skills across the consortium. This process resulted in a comprehensive TT8 Good Practices Guide and four capacity building sessions covering key themes: data-driven and community-engaged contemporary creation, the integration of social sciences and technology in the arts, eco-responsible festival and event management, and environmental approaches in artistic production.

Over the coming weeks, we will spotlight each session and share the key insights and tools that shaped the guide, highlighting practical takeaways for artists and cultural and creative sector professionals.

Inside Katarina Gryvul’s residency in Rennes ✨

Take a look back at Katarina Gryvul’s residency in Rennes, where she carried out field recording and artistic research within the framework of TT8. The residency culminated in an Artist Talk & Workshop on December 17, welcoming 17 participants.

Designed as a women and gender minorities-only workshop (a non-mixed space by choice), the session created a safer environment for exchange, peer support, and empowerment within electronic and experimental music.

During the Artist Talk & Workshop, participants engaged with:
• Katarina’s artistic research process, connecting field recordings in Rennes (including explorations of local soundscapes such as Parc du Thabor) with TT8 data and her performance work,
• practical insights on affirming artistic identity, articulating a project, and building professional visibility in experimental music scenes,
• a collective listening session where participants shared their own tracks and received direct feedback and advice,
• open discussion on the expectations of festivals and labels, and on questions of legitimacy and professional positioning.

The session was highly appreciated for its supportive format, the clarity of Katarina’s guidance, and the opportunity for direct feedback, highlighting how artistic mediation can strengthen confidence, skills, and community connection while advancing ongoing artistic research.
