Post Meta Neo Mythology Post Meta Neo Mythology My name is Lyubov Matyunina, I am a visual artist based in Amsterdam. I incorporate an anthropological approach in my artistic research.

As an artist I want my work to speak with people through the intuitive patterns of the soul. My desire is to share the magic of this world, with all the dramas and the joys that humans experience. In my practice I explore urgent themes of the contemporary, unpacking representations of myths from the past. With my work I create alternative realities and mythologies that touch upon the body of ‘real

ity’ but transform it by injecting it with fantasies, dreams, humor and a sense of the absurd. I juxtapose rituals, masks, costumes, textile and carpets, folk stories and religious traditions with virtual reality, the Internet and social media, as a means of understanding and rethinking the contemporary. I would like to use Instagram masks as a tool for people to tell their stories and dream incognito. Virtual digital masks for Instagram stories are available to all Instagram users. I want to create a virtual flashmob, asking people to share their myth/fairy tale/dream using my digital masks. The richest stories will be included in an interactive contemporary mythology archive. This is contemporary mythology being created and happening here and now, and everybody can be part of it. This way I want to create an archive of people’s dreams, where they tell the stories themselves in their own personalized way. I see this archive as a mythological mirror of our society. As Erich Fromm said: "Both dreams and myths are important communications from ourselves to ourselves." If we do not understand the language in which they are written, we miss a great deal of what we know and tell ourselves in those hours when we are not busy manipulating the outside world. I started this project with the support of a small grant from AFK during Coronatime, later my project was supported by Bank Giro Laterij and Wilhelmina Jansen fond.

We filmed a small futuristic fairy tale 💥 that will be part of my Post Meta Neo Mythology.

I got an idea during the first snow day on Sunday, the same night draw all the costumes and set up. Every evening was working on the head masks and finally today we filmed! Bam! 5 days from idea to realization. Love it!

Wind in my head.

Since I moved to the Netherlands, I was trying to find wildness. It’s remained in the sea and in the wind. The rest is man-made.

I have a theory, that first people who came to the low lands didn’t have any beliefs or cult about Nature. So they can fight with the sea, pump out the water and create a land.

Maybe that’s why my wild nature is always looking for escape to the unpredictable Nature. But always come back to the rational, save and comfortable low lands.

My duality in balance only in movement, I miss traveling so badly...

Post Meta Neo Mythology includes three parts: Folklore and Mythology collection (Skype recordings of people who share their story's with me) Dreams and Fairy Tales that's still operating in society ( Digital performances with filters and digital masks) and Future Mythology (myth and fairy tales to come, based on futuristic prognoses and my artistic view).
I am happy that my project was supported by Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst back in May this year!
In June We Are Public supported my art practice, and this project in particular.

Another good news is that first part of the project - Folklore and Mythology collection was supported by Wilhelmina Jansen Fund! Specifically for Russian folklore collection! So I am looking forward to record grandmother and grandfathers from my motherland, sharing their favorite folk tales!

Second part of my project - Digital performances you were able to see this summer. After a break, I am starting to perform again! So stay tuned for your favorite digital performances using Instagram masks. AND! My project was supported by BankGiro Loterij Fonds so very soon I will start flash mob - so you also can share your favorite fairy tale using digital masks! I am working on video instruction right now, more information will follow!

Third part of the project is kind of "sleeping beauty", because I am in my research phase, collecting futuristic prognoses and reading different theories!

All parts of the project will come together on Post Meta Neo Mythology Digital Archive upcoming March! So it will be super fun and magic! Join me for the ride)

My eyes are half-closed, I drift at the border of the worlds, another breath and I fall into the cotton candy of my imagination. I descend lower and lower into unexplored caves with cave paintings.

What myths do I compose about myself and the world every night?

Every morning, like phoenixes from the ashes, we get out of bed.
Social media is a world of pixel dust and fairy tales. This is the place where dreams die and are replaced by someone else's reality. This is a place where other people make more money, have more fun, and live better lives. Our pixelated dream and a new myth. We stuck to the screens and plunged into the Internet like a sweet dream.

Often in dreams, large bodies of water symbolize the unconscious. As with bodies of water, we often see the surface, but cannot easily see into the depths.

Water is the “valley spirit,” the water dragon of Tao, whose nature resembles water- a yang in the yin, therefore, water means spirit that has become unconscious.

From a spiritual perspective, through the spiritual networks, planet earth is seen as an irregular ball immersed in water. If the sacred gift of the earth is life, then water is the custodian of life.

Therefore, water is the reconnecting element between our materialistic life and the spiritual world.

A water spirit is a kind of supernatural being found in the folklore of many cultures.

”Fairy tales prescribe restrictive social roles for women and perpetuate ‘alluring fantasies’ of punishment and reward: passivity, beauty, and helplessness lead to marriage, conferring wealth and status, whereas self-aware, ‘aggressive’, and powerful women experience social censure and are either ostracized or killed.” - wrote Karen Rowe.

Although many readers discount obvious fantasy elements, they may still fall prey to more subtle paradigms through identification with the heroine. Thus, subconsciously women may transfer from fairy tales into real life cultural norms which exalt passivity, dependency, and self‐sacrifice as a female's cardinal virtues. In short, fairy tales perpetuate the patriarchal status quo by making female subordination seem a romantically desirable, indeed an inescapable fate.

In feminists points of view, fairy tales are another chance to create woman’s voice and to develop self-expression.

We can create a new mythology and new fairy tales, it’s all in our hands.

Unlike most yōkai which are born as monsters, rokurokubi and their close relatives nukekubi are former humans—transformed by a curse resulting from some evil or misdeed. Perhaps they sinned against the gods or nature, or perhaps they were unfaithful to their husbands. In many cases, their husbands or fathers actually committed the sin. By some cruel twist of fate the men escape punishment and the women receive the curse instead. In any case, the rokurokubi curse only affects women.

So much like today world, men committed the sin and woman receive the curse instead. In our hands change this and create a new reality and new folklore!

For shamans, a mask is a tool of transformation, for me it’s a tool to visualize and create what I feel and how I see the world. For each of my projects I make new costumes and masks, as each mask has a different purpose.
