Artist : ATHENA KONTONIKOLAKI

• How did you start working with ceramics?
I began working with ceramics during a period of personal transition, when motherhood introduced a new rhythm to my life and created space for creative exploration. My first contact with clay came from a need for expression and a desire to reconnect with something handmade. Very quickly, it evolved into a serious and ongoing artistic practice. I was drawn to the immediacy of the material and the way it transforms through process.

• What does ceramics offer you?
Ceramics offers me a way to communicate beyond words. It is a space where functionality meets abstraction, allowing me to explore the tension between utility and sculptural presence. The process itself — from hand-building and wheel-throwing to glaze development and firing experiments — is a continuous play of trial and error that connects me deeply to the material and its possibilities. It allows me to deepen my relationship with form, surface, and concept.

• What would you like to offer the audience through your work?
Through my work, I aim to offer an experience that bridges the everyday and the poetic. I want my pieces to function not only as usable objects, but also as carriers of presence — inviting the viewer or user into a dialogue with form, materiality, and emotion. I hope my work conveys a sense of calm, introspection, and transformation, much like the experience clay offers me.

Artist : POLYZOI GEORGIA .ceramics

Artwork:
Title: Undulating Lines
Dimensions: H 19.5 cm × W 25.5 cm × D 19 cm
Material: porcelain

The piece was created by shaping sheets of porcelain that were folded and layered to evoke a sense of movement, flow, and soft folds.

Georgia has been working with ceramics for the past four years, attending both in-person and online courses and seminars. Her work combines functionality with organic form, drawing inspiration from nature. Emphasizing fluidity and sculptural presence, her creations move between the functional and the expressive, creating a dialogue between light, shadow, and material.

«I was drawn to ceramics by the need to work with my hands and to create something authentic from the beginning.

Ceramics offers me calm, focus, and a way to express myself through material and form.

Through my work, I would like to offer not only objects but experiences. I hope to invite viewers to pause, reflect, and feel. For me, this is perhaps the deepest role ceramics can have—as a means of expression, not only as a functional tool.»

Artist : MICHALAROU KATERINA

Artworks:
The presented body of work explores ritual, transformation, and the inner forces that shape human experience.

“The Ritual Within” is a ceramic installation composed of eight elements—vessel, mask, cups, bases, and candle holders—forming a symbolic environment that reflects what we offer of ourselves to what we believe in.

The sculpture “Serpent of Rebirth” evokes renewal and cyclical transformation, while the untitled sculpture with wheat elements suggests fertility, growth, and continuity.

Finally, “IGNIS ANIMALIA” embodies a primal, instinctive energy, where form and fire converge.

Created primarily in stoneware and Nigra clay through pinching, slab-building, and coiling techniques, the works combine sculptural presence with a tactile, ritualistic quality.

A few words of the artist:
“I first came into contact with ceramics during the time I lived on Sifnos. My works always seemed to want to “come out” of the paper. Having a natural inclination toward three-dimensional forms, textures, and collage with natural materials, when I returned to Athens I felt it was time to experiment with clay and learn the art of ceramics alongside Menandros Papadopoulos.

Beyond clay as a means of expression—which, when I shape it, makes me stop thinking, or even when I am thinking somehow leads me elsewhere, something I find fascinating—ceramics also offers me space for experimentation.

Since I mainly create monotypes in painting, I am drawn to the anticipation of the final result without being able to predict it precisely. Even the “accidents” in ceramics feel as though they have something to tell me.

I would like the audience to experience the magic that clay holds for me: how a seemingly formless material can take on the shape of the images born in one’s mind”.

Artist : ORIO ISAVELLA

Artworks:
=> Plate: “The Archetypal Goats of the Circle”
Stoneware clay, painted with stains
Wheel-thrown
=> Vase: “The Cracks of Light”
Black stoneware clay (Nigra)
Wheel-thrown; double firing; white crawl glaze over black clay.

“Ceramics entered my life in 2019, when I tried the wheel for the first time and immediately felt that I had found a new way of expressing myself. Since then, it has become part of my daily life.

Ceramic art offers me calm, focus, and a sense of connection with the material and the process. It is a space where I can explore, experiment, and allow my hands to lead.

I wish to offer to people objects that carry the simplicity and warmth of the handmade—pieces that become part of everyday life and convey a sense of tranquility and familiarity”.

Artist : SIFNAIOU ELEFTHERIA

From an early age, Eleftheria Sifnaiou was drawn to composition, color, and image, expressing an inner rhythm through constant spatial rearrangements and evolving collages. She studied fashion design in Milan and worked as a model in Athens and abroad, while also studying Marketing & Management in Greece and engaging with interior decoration. Her early object-making combined sewing, textiles, painting, and natural materials, gradually leading her to clay as a more direct form of expression.

She began working with ceramics in 2017 at the studio of Michalis Sklavainas and studied ceramic technology with Menandros Papadopoulos in 2023. Largely self-taught, clay is now her primary medium. Her work explores flow, energy, and spontaneous gesture, creating organic forms that carry traces of memory, humor, and primal expression.

Her work balances between the primordial and the contemporary, creating ceramic pieces that function as carriers of energy, symbols, and silent presence.

Vase 1 - LAKOTA
Symbol of community and collective memory. The central, totemic design alludes to primitive languages and childlike incisions, creating a form that seems to carry stories and ritual references. A totem-object that connects the primordial with a contemporary gaze.

Vase 2 - DAKOTA
Primordial, symbolic presence. The eyes function as points of vision and intuition, while the motifs surrounding the form refer to totemic languages and childlike markings. The circular narrative creates a map of inner energy and memory.

Vase 3 - FLOW BETWEEN FORMS
Captures the flow of energy between forms. The profiles in motion and the central line create a map of movement that connects the visible with the intangible.
