Last days to see Douglas Knesse’s Douglas Knesse exhibition “Dreaming was not enough”.
What emerges from the paintings is not an image of tranquillity, but a reflection on a society perpetually searching for a better elsewhere.
Both cities , Rio and Athens, occupy a complex position within the global imagination: celebrated for their beauty, mythology, and symbolic significance, yet marked by the realities and contradictions of everyday life. By bringing these places into dialogue, Knesse examines the mechanisms through which paradise is imagined and desired.

On view till Saturday, July 25 📍 .

As the artist notes, “I always begin with a blank white canvas but without a clear idea of what will emerge”. Interesting enough he turns to a more figurative language, depicting ancient Greek vases; once functional objects used in daily life, they now belong to the realm of history and collective memory. His paintings are intuitive, driven by the nature of his actions, reactions, and emotions while his artworks are alive with colours, moods, and nuanced compositional transitions.

Zoumboulakis Gallery 20 Kolonaki square is delighted to host Douglas Knesse’s Douglas Knesse first solo show in Greece, “Dreaming was not enough”, as part of the “Artist by Invitation Residency”, in Athens during June-July 2026.

Brazilian artist Douglas Knesse continues in his new body of work to question the notion of paradise. What does paradise mean today? How does it relate to our enduring aspirations for utopia? The concept of utopia itself derives from the Greek ou-topos, meaning “no place,” revealing a fundamental paradox: the imagining of a perfect place that, by definition, cannot exist.

Zoumboulakis Gallery presents Marina Karella’s new body of work alongside rare selections from her longstanding oeuvre in the solo exhibition “Le Passage” curated by Kasia Maciejowska .

The new pieces signify an era of transition in which the iconic artist explores the passage of life, its relationship with fantasy and realms beyond the human world.

Works on canvas, as well as drawings, ceramic plates, and painted tiles, underscore Karella's desire to cross the boundaries between the everyday and the imaginary, the sublime and the familiar.
