Mother’s House explores the transition from childhood to adulthood through Eugenia Efstathiou’s changing relationship with her body and her feminine identity. Time does not operate linearly: past and present coexist, as childhood memories are revisited through a more mature perspective. The photographs, taken in the artist’s family home, reconnect a space of innocence and intimacy with the process of personal transformation. Through this encounter, Mother’s House examines memory, change and the formation of the self. The images have been printed using the cyanotype method on disposable coffee filters, highlighting the fragility of this transition and the vulnerability that accompanies it.

My work moves between public and private spaces, rooted in the urban environment of Jaffa, a mixed city of Jewish and Arab communities. Through murals and site-specific interventions, I engage directly with the surroundings and their inhabitants. In my work, I aim to bring forward a female experience, that is not always visible; one rooted in sensitivity, intuition, and presence, expressed through colour, repetition, and symbolic forms.

Being Seen
Performance

Being Seen is a durational performance that places the body in prolonged visibility, as a fixed, living image that persists in time. The work approaches visibility not only as an exposure to the gaze, but also as a gendered social condition: the female body appears as something that is called upon to be composed, controlled, quiet, visible and available for viewing. The performance unfolds through cycles of stillness and extremely slow movement. The body does not narrate, it does not seek a climax or produce a spectacle. It remains. In this condition, stillness does not function as neutrality, but as a field of tension and discipline. It activates the codes that are inscribed early on in the female body: to sit sensibly, to behave properly, not to disturb, to be restrained and to be pleasing to the eye. “Being Seen” thus proposes the “GOOD GIRL” not as a character, but as a mechanism of performance; αs a regime of viewing, self-restraint and bodily discipline, through which the “right” femininity is produced. Through duration, the performance shifts this form from a surface of conformity to a field of wear and tear and endurance.

My artistic practice consists essentially of assembling, by forming visual or sculptural-pictorial installations, as well as performances with objects of various kinds: installations with natural and artificial objects to unite them in a single body, as a product of objects and l waste materials. Gemelle consists of two small ceramics that are different, but empathise with each other and with the viewer, melting and gathering what the viewer has to offer. The work aims to reflect the female presence in nature, with a value that is as explosive as it is intimate, which can burst forth and can gather.

I create works that, through their texture and complexity, they explore the concepts of body, gender, identity and “belonging”. The aim of my work is to review the normality and limits set by Western, capitalist, patriarchal societies. Through my works, individually but also as a whole, I’m interested in building a world of authenticity, where the “other” and the “foreign” are always welcome, far from oppressive orders. I am interested in the parallelism between the history of materials in art and the human life, as well as the transformation of an experience into a visual artwork. As a result, I work with a wide range of materials, chosen specifically for each project.

“For seven months, every time I brushed my hair, I collected what remained on the comb. I separated the black and white strands and placed them into the pages of my diary. Later, I rewrote selected words and sentences from that diary using the hair itself. These rewritten fragments are the parts I felt ready to share almost like a confessional letter. Yet this is not a direct confession; rather, it is a way of projecting a version of myself. The original diary is private and ordinary, consisting of everyday thoughts. Once rewritten with hair, the text shifts from language into material, moving away from communication toward presence. Hair, as a bodily residue, carries an intimate and personal charge. By using modest materials such as a simple diary and tape, I avoid theatricality. The gesture remains quiet, structured through repetition and accumulation. In this sense, the work relates to forms of self-regulation and control, subtly echoing the conditions through which the figure of the “good girl” is produced.”

“Anne” in Turkish means “mother”.

“My practice revolves around memory, the body, and the intangible forms of experience that are not immediately recorded, but persist through time. I am interested in how social roles and norms - particularly regarding care, silence, and restraint - are inscribed in the body before they are even articulated as consciousness. I work with archival and personal material, which I detach from its original context and reposition it as an open field of reading. The anonymity and the avoidance of linear narrative are central, so that the artwork functions beyond biography, as a situation rather than a narrative. Through simple installations and small shifts in scale, position and gaze, I attempt to create spaces where the familiar becomes unstable. My interest lies in what does not become immediately apparent: the tensions that remain silent, the deviations that are not stated, and the ways in which the body carries, transports and holds.”
