We are very glad to invite you for our next event:

Micromemories not nationstate(s)

Screening: two works by Yara Haskiel

MAY 8TH NOUCMAS
KASOU 3, KYPSELİ, ATHENS
Doors opening at 19:30 Screening at 20:00 followed by a conversation with the artist.

The video diary series I don’t write diaries: On Love and Crisis and the Power of Fragility, 31:10 min (2014–2016, revised 2026), examines how precariousness and fragility, within the context of austerity, shape social movements and intimate relationships as both individual and collective experiences.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The video essay Precarious Twilight Zones (2021), 39:15 min, tells the story of the erasure, annihilation, and absence of Jewish Thessaloniki. The work makes visible both analogies and ruptures in the nationalist and modernist project of Hellenisation, which is articulated today through neoliberal abandonment and the precarisation of minoritarian voices. Traces of the forgotten dead and those who became nameless in the processes before, during, and after German occupation, and their violent historic-temporalities remain as scattered material culture in ancient tombstones, whose fragments are expropriated, ripped apart, and spread throughout the cityscape.

Yara Haskiel (Dr. phil.) is a Berlin-based filmmaker and artistic researcher with Sephardic ancestry from Thessaloniki. She works at the intersection of filmmaking, artistic research, and theory, and studied Experimental Film, Art, and Media at UdK Berlin and HFBK Hamburg. She holds a Master’s degree in Museology and Critical Theory (MACBA/UAB) and a PhD in Visual Cultures from Goldsmiths, University of London.

Her practice spans film, installation, and performance, engaging with archival material, diaristic methodologies, and interviews. Focusing on erased, minor, and contested histories and their transgenerational constellations, she develops video essays and research-based works that explore the temporalities of memory activism, rebellious mourning and the autonomy of (transcultural) matter.

We are currently hosting Ahmad Baba at NOUCMAS for a month of experimentation around his project the “Walls of Hasra حيطان الحسرة”.

The "Walls of Hasra حيطان الحسرة” is an exploration of the embodiment of loss through architectural memory, treating walls as archives of grief. It considers walls, buildings, and any standing architecture as vessels that hold inscriptions of trauma, communicated through writings, symbols, and visual marks, graffiti, colors, scratches, or other forms of expression. These inscriptions form a shared language of grief, occupying a liminal space between collective memory and personal loss, articulating what often cannot be put into words. Grief is universal, yet in the Arab context, it often becomes a defining identity, traveling across borders with those who have left their homelands. Grief has always sought surfaces to cling to. This project asks: what happens when there are no walls left to bear our grief—when we find ourselves in wall-less landscapes, overwhelmed by the enormity of the sorrow within us? The work reflects on how grief persists and seeks form, even in the absence of physical surfaces to receive it. "

We are happy to host the performance that will conclude Ahmad's residency in Athens on the evening of 13th February. More info soon so stay tuned.

Save the date! 🪐☄️🪐☄️🪐☄️

NOUCMAS presents the new series of works by Olga Souri, which explores the enduring obsession of capital with space conquest. The series focuses on the contemporary ambitions of billionaires who pursue space not for scientific advancement, but for personal branding and prestige.

The artistic approach unfolds through a science fiction narrative: in a not-so-distant future, Earth’s ultra-wealthy have depleted their fortunes through countless failed attempts to settle in space. The endeavor leads to their financial ruin. At this point, a non-profit organization steps in to help by organizing a massive auction of planets, plots of land and business ventures in outer space.

If even planets are going under the hammer, who will place a bid on the moon?

As part of the exhibition’s opening, an interactive performance by Afroditi Anastopoulou will be presented, simulating the auction experience.
