Roma Gallery is pleased to announce "GRIDS", Aubert Issachar’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Curated by art historian Alia Tsagkari, the exhibition opens on Thursday 17 September 2026, from 19:00 and continues until Saturday 10 October 2026.
Born in London in 1979, Issachar addresses identity and the formation of meaning through myth, archetypes and various linguistic forms. In the 2026 series "Totemic Grids" and "Triadic Grids", palindromes, ambigrams and occasional Sator squares recur within crossword-like structures, giving written language a spatial role. Figures and formless painterly elements partly obscure these wordplays, interrupting their legibility and the grid’s regularity.
In "Triadic Grids", the vertically alligned registers are organised according to Sigmund Freud’s tripartite model of the psyche, with the superego above, the ego at the centre and the id below. The upper register presents internalised social norms and cultural codes as archetypal or oracular statements. The central and largest register corresponds to the ego, governed by the reality principle and oriented towards the external world. The lower concentrates instinct, visceral desire and ungoverned emotion.
This part provides the clearest link to the more expressionistic "Tantrum" series (2025–2026), in which overlapping forms, mirrored figures and abstract motifs recall automatic writing. The mirrored figures suggest psychic self-portraiture and sometimes assume the contours of the four ghosts from Pac-Man, bringing back the iconography of early arcade culture.
Issachar has presented solo and two-person exhibitions in São Paulo, London, Geneva, Basel and Gstaad. His work is held in public and private collections in Brazil and Europe.
