Λένε πως μέσα στη φωνή της Ann O’aro, βγαίνει ένα τραγούδι που αγκαλιάζει τον ασυμβίβαστο αγώνα της για την αποαποικιοποίηση του σώματος. Ένα τραγούδι που κοιτά στα μάτια το σκοτάδι, χωρίς να φοβάται τις σκιές, ένα τραγούδι-πρό(σ)κληση στην υπόθεση των Lagon Nwar, εκεί που συναντώνται οι γειωμένες μνήμες από την Μπουρκίνα Φάσο, τα avant garde ξέφτια των Tri-Collectif, η ορμητική Creole παράδοση, η ακατέργαστη afro jazz, κι η λοξή ευρωπαϊκή pop. Στον παρθενικό του δίσκο που μόλις συμπλήρωσε ένα χρόνο ζωής, αυτό το δαιμονισμένο γαλλικό κουαρτέτο δεν συνηγόρησε ποτέ με την έννοια των συνόρων. Υπογράμμισε τα περιγράμματα ενός διαλόγου μεταξύ Μασκαρέν, Παρισιού και Ουαγκά, πόνταρε ηλεκτρικά στην αλμυρή γεύση του νερού, στην οσμή του λιμανιού και των πυρομαχικών του, σε εκείνα τα «ασήμαντα» που είναι τόσα παλιά όσο κι η ίδια η ζωή. Το συναυλιακό τελετουργικό των Lagon Nwar, δε χωρά σε δίσκους ή streaming links. Είναι μια εμπειρία που διαπιστώνει κανείς με τα ίδια του τα μάτια.

It’s been said that Ann O’aro’s voice turns every song into a rousing call for the decolonization of the body. It’s a voice that dares to stare darkness in the eye and challenges listeners to engage deeply with the music of Lagon Nwar, where memories grounded in the land of Burkina Faso meet the dregs of Tri-collectif’s avant-garde, the propulsive power of Creole tradition, the rawness of afro jazz and the weirdness of European pop. With its debut album, this feverish French quartet mocks the very idea of borders, starting a dialogue between the Mascareignes, Paris and Ouagadougou to produce a fresh, electric sound that tastes like salt water, smells like the port and its armaments, and celebrates all those seemingly small things that are as old as life itself. The ritualistic performances of Lagon Nwar can’t fit into album releases and streaming links. They are living, breathing organisms that can only be experienced first-hand.
