All hail the women of Bologna, Italy ✨
Did you know that from 1500 through the 1800s, Bologna was home to more women artists than any other city in early modern Italy?
Bolognese women painted altarpieces, portraits, created sculptures, drawings, prints, and so much more…
We can only imagine how fascinating the lives of these women must have been…just ask the National Gallery’s curator of Italian and Spanish paintings, Eve Straussman-Pflanzer.
In a fascinating new article on the museum’s blog, Eve takes us on a fictional journey through a day in the lives of two very real historical figures: Bolognese artist Lavinia Fontana and noblewoman Costanza Alidosi.
