UNDER THE SIGN OF THE FOLD

Today, “Alba Savoi: Under the Sign of the Fold” came to an end.

We would like to warmly thank everyone who visited the gallery for the first retrospective dedicated to the Roman artist in Athens.

The exhibition brought together forty exceptional works, including paintings, collages, sculptures and artist’s books, focusing closely on her seminal period from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. Through this journey, visitors explored how Savoi looked beyond the figure to investigate what lies in potential. Her powerful manipulation of the canvas turned the “fold” from a domestic association into a vital and conceptual force bridging the philosophical reflections of Gilles Deleuze with the tactile spirit of Baroque drapery.

Our gallery will remain closed for a short break until 18.06.2026

SAVE THE DATE

Gramma_Epsilon Gallery is pleased to present “Grammars of the Possible: Between Word and Sign” curated by Paolo Cortese.

The exhibition inaugurates the first chapter of the ongoing series Grammars of the Possible, dedicated to women artists who have explored language in its expanded poetic and visual forms.

Bringing together works by Mirella Bentivoglio, Amelia Etlinger, Elisabetta Gut and Greta Schödl, the exhibition traces four distinct yet interconnected approaches to the relationship between writing, image and poetic form. Through visual poetry, artist books and object-based practices, language is transformed into gesture, rhythm, matter and sign.

PRESSIONE

“The idea of the fold also creates other meanings, so there is this possibility of expressing something beyond the obvious, even if it is an apparently abstract sign. If someone knows how to read it, the whole meaning is always there.

As for the fold in the painting’s canvas, by handling the canvas, I make a fold. Mirella (Bentivoglio) said very well that this is, in a sense, a reclaiming of the female role, because the female role has traditionally been subordinate, like the canvas. In this case, however, on an unconscious level, I’m trying to show my position as a woman who stays in the background, who accepts certain things, for example, as the canvas accepts colors and pencil marks. To declare yourself and make your own mark becomes an attitude of rebellion against a passive role.”

ART COLLECTIVES

“Throughout the long and prolific career of Alba Savoi, a significant role is played by her involvement in numerous collectives, groups and associations of fellow artists, in which she participated with conviction from the years of her abstract turning point, dated between 1977 and 1978.

The collective La Ruota was founded in 1978 by Alba Savoi together with her fellow artists and friends Teresa Pollidori and Silvana Leonardi, whom she met at meetings of the Artists’ Union of the CGIL. The group exhibited twice during the summer of that same year: first in Fiumicino in July, as part of the Estate Romana, and then in August in Guarcino, before disbanding permanently (...) Their proposal demonstrates a strong sensitivity of Alba Savoi and her colleagues toward psychological aspects, along with a conception of art understood as an evolving process rather than merely a final result. Above all, it highlights the artist’s firm conviction in her social and relational interactions, as well as in her ethical commitment.”

PRESSIONE

“Art left structure for context, as the first recognition of the autonomy of matter freeing its abstract body. From her formative apprenticeship in parchment miniatures of ancient iconographies, Savoi starts just at this point, fundamental for all of modern art. She does not cover canvas with folds (All-over), but transforms the canvas itself into crease, tension, torsion oriented toward a precise conceptual goal; she creates a wrinkle in the text (Fold-in), of which the consequence is an extension outside (Cut-up), following definitions used by Carl Andre for his sculptures, cuts of creases in space.

The autonomy of canvas creases related to its support, which is the loom, connotes the surface as an event, the manifestation of an aesthetic act: the matter folds as time folds.”

SEGNO/CAMPO

“In “Remakes” of the middle ’80s, cloth explicitly declared its peculiarity as flexible material, by complying with an individual and factive identity, not only objective and objectified, thereby freeing its own plastic attitude in which the idea of a dynamic fusion takes form between painting and sculpture. Folded matter tends to leave the square and to extend itself, so complying with that peculiar Baroque style which consists in setting itself between two parts, painting and sculpture, sculpture and architecture, to reach a unity and keep the spectator there.”

FOLDS

“Gilles Deleuze, in his essay The Fold: Leibniz and the Baroque, traced the evolution of The Fold, identifying its apotheosis in Baroque aesthetics, characterized by continuous folding, unfolding and refolding to infinity. Starting from this idea, the philosopher used the metaphor of the fold to define the formation of the soul and contemporary consciousness, following its presence across artistic expressions: in Mallarmé’s poetry, Proust’s novels, Michaux’s work and Hantaï’s painting.
In the endless reproduction of folds, in their constant generation of visual compositions, geometric relationships and “harmonies” we can find an analogy with Alba Savoi’s unconventional vision. For her, the fold was not only a stylistic choice but a worldview, a sign of a reality destined to unfold and reveal itself differently each time.”

XEROXCULTURES

“These emblematic and at times disorienting protrusions, drawn and cut out on wooden panels whose double-sided surfaces Alba Savoi covers with photocopies, a sort of post-industrial totem, condense and organize, multiplying them infinitely, the filament-like textures of blacks and whites. The artist herself defines them as xeroxcultures: although volumetric, they are by vocation and choice frontal in nature, even if, as the relief gradually increases, a close relationship develops between the image-figure and its counterpart, space itself, which nevertheless continues to articulate itself around them.

(...) Alba Savoi seeks a harmonious order of forms, ultimately identifiable with an Olympian vision of life, in order to reconstruct, overcoming anguish and destruction, a new mythology of art.”

MIRELLA & ALBA

Mirella Bentivoglio and Alba Savoi met in the early 1980s, beginning a long-lasting artistic relationship built on mutual respect and a shared sensitivity towards material and experimentation. Savoi soon became an integral part of the circle of women artists that Bentivoglio supported and curated through exhibitions dedicated to artist books and Fiber Art. Years later, Savoi’s artwork “Di-Aria” became part of the Donazione Bentivoglio at MART, continuing the connection between the two artists and their shared place within the history of postwar Italian women’s art.

As Bentivoglio wrote about Savoi’s work, it was “not a violence against the canvas, but a rebellion of the canvas itself (…) What writes itself in these folds is light; and the ink of light is shadow.”
