In an era where uncertainty, global crises and constant changes shape our daily lives, the concept of optimism takes on a new, more complex dimension. The exhibition Optimism, despite everything proposes a creative reading of the optimistic gaze — not as blind belief in positivity, but as an attitude that insists on finding meaning, humor and poetry even within contradictions. Through the artworks in the exhibition which move between lyricism, surrealism and humor, optimism emerges as a creative and profoundly human act of resistance.

Through diverse voices and artistic languages, the exhibition expresses the belief that optimism is not naivety, but a conscious choice: to hope, to reimagine a better world, even when everything seems to be falling apart. The exhibition Optimism, despite everything is not a denial of reality. On the contrary, it aspires to function like an open window in a room full of dust. The sun enters; it does not remove the dust, but reminds us that there is always light in the darkness, and as long as one can see...the dust can always be brushed away.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Emmanuel Mavrommatis (1935 - 2026), a long-standing collaborator of the gallery. We will remember him as a figure of enduring vitality, distinguished by boundless creativity and an endless love to his late wife, the esteemed artist Nausica Pastra (1921–2011).

Through his work, he highlighted the identity of modern Greek art and connected it with the international art scene. His contribution to the understanding and promotion of art in Greece was paramount.

Eugenia Apostolou: Transience
Opening: Thursday 19 March, 18.00 – 21.00

Panos Giannikopoulos (Art Historian – Curator) writes about the exhibition:

Eugenia Apostolou presents her new solo exhibition Transience, marking her first presentation at Kalfayan Galleries. The exhibition brings together works shaped through recurring transformations of matter, placing process at the centre of the pictorial field. Seriality, the physical act of painting, automatism, conscious gesture and subconscious impulse coexist with a reflective disposition. Apostolou revisits the history of abstraction while developing a practice organised through cycles of deposition, removal and reconfiguration [...]

Warm tonalities of colour pass through vertical strips of surgical gauze placed across the canvas. The fabric absorbs pigment into its fibres and gradually transfers it onto the surface beneath, where the weave leaves its imprint. Apostolou employs the material until the pigment thickens and alters the gauze’s capacity to transmit colour. The permeability of these bandages allows multiple phases of the process to coexist, as different temporal layers remain legible across the surface.

Through the use of surgical gauze, the artist evokes cultural and bodily associations, referring to gestures of covering, protection and care. The material recalls wounded surfaces and acts of tending. Red tonalities intensify these resonances, suggesting the interior of the body and a landscape that emerges from within.

Kalfayan Galleries (M204) is pleased to announce its inaugural participation in Art Basel Qatar 2026, presenting Stillness in the Flux by Greek-Egyptian artist Farida El Gazzar.

The project brings together a large-scale mural and intimate, vividly colored works on paper, inspired by Greece, Egypt, and the Gulf, as well as illuminated manuscripts, Arab literature, and the poetry of C.P. Cavafy. Moving between past and present, personal and collective memory, El Gazzar’s landscapes evoke nostalgia and quiet euphoria—where East meets West in a timeless dance of transformation.

Bill Balaskas: As Below, So Above
19th Venice Architecture Biennale
Thursday, 13 November 2025
12:00 – 13:00, Arsenale

In his lecture-performance ‘As Below, So Above’, Bill Balaskas draws a parallel between the invisibility of the canals-‘rivers’ (“rii”) of Venice which were transformed into streets over the city’s history while still allowing water to flow beneath them to preserve tidal movements (“Rii Terà con volti”), and the invisibility of atmospheric–“flying” rivers whose preservation is essential for the hydrological cycle and for tackling climate change. The event is based on a performance which took place across Venice’s Rii Terà con volti in October 2025. In ‘As Below, So Above’, Balaskas combines projected documentation from the performance, narrations regarding the histories of each of the Rii Terà featured, and narratives based on different invisible journeys of atmospheric rivers around the world.

The event is part of the official public programme of the 19th Venice Architecture Biennale, titled ‘Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective.’, curated by Carlo Ratti (10 May – 23 November 2025). ‘As Below, So Above’ is the second of three events at the Biennale by Bill Balaskas, all of which also constitute precursors to his new environmental action project ‘Flying Rivers’.
