AN IMAGE OF WATER
Water is what our bodies are primarily made of. Water is thirst. Water’s shape is dependent on whatever contains it. It might reflect or refract light; it can be a mirror or a window, like a photograph. Water is a powerful symbol. In Santorini, wherever you look there is water. After a few days on the island, it becomes the canvas of your vision, its beginning and end. In this 5-day workshop, participants will pick up the challenge of creating imagery of water.

We’ll look at works that have addressed this topic as well as similar challenges, in and outside the medium of photography, and we will all work on a project that will possibly take us from the island to somewhere else.

There’s no limit to the approaches people can adopt. Projects can be documentary in nature—for example, dealing with how water informs the lives of people (fishing, tourism, migration, etc.)—but they might also, for instance, address water as matter and use it as part of photographic processes. Some might choose to adopt more poetic approaches that rely on metaphor or oblique narratives.

In this five-day intensive workshop, artist and editor Tiago Casanova, founding member of XYZ Books, will guide participants through the essential stages of photobook creation: defining a strong concept, editing and sequencing images, understanding book design, and producing a physical dummy.
Limited to a small group of eight participants maximum, the workshop combines daily lectures, group discussions, practical exercises, and individual mentoring sessions. Each participant will receive one-on-one guidance while developing their project, allowing time for reflection, experimentation and critical feedback.

Throughout the week, participants will explore key aspects of photobook making, including:

• Developing and refining the concept and audience of a project
• Editing and narrowing down a photographic selection
• Strategies for visual sequencing and narrative rhythm
• Understanding how book design connects concept and object
• Exploring materials, formats, paper, covers and binding
• Preparing files and producing a printed dummy

The workshop places a strong emphasis on the relationship between idea, image, and object, encouraging participants to think of the photobook as a complete artistic form rather than simply a container of photographs.

During the final days of the workshop, participants will design and print a working dummy of their book, which will be assembled together through a collective bookbinding session.

The workshop concludes with a lecture on the practical realities of publishing photobooks, covering self-publishing, working with publishers, printing techniques, costs, and distribution strategies.

SEEING BEYOND: Intuition & Presence in Photography
Photography as a practice of attention rather than control.
This workshop invites you to step away from expectations, habits, and technique-driven results, and instead explore how intuition and presence can guide the act of photographing.

Beginning with a review of participants’ existing work, we’ll trace individual ways of seeing and use them as a starting point. Through daily exercises, shared walks, and moments of pause in the city of Athens, we’ll practice noticing what draws us in, releasing fixed ideas, and allowing space for unplanned discoveries to emerge.

Group critiques and open conversations are central to the process—offering time to reflect on what intuitive practice reveals, and how images can hold meaning beyond what appears on the surface.

By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with practical tools for working more intuitively, renewed confidence in their own visual language, and strategies for moving through creative blocks.

This is not only about strengthening your photography, but about cultivating presence—learning how to let a photograph bring both you and the viewer fully into the moment.

AN IMAGE OF WATER
A 5-day workshop dedicated to exploring water as subject, material, and metaphor.
Water shapes our bodies, carries memory, reflects and refracts light — it can be a mirror, a window, even a photographic surface itself.
Set in Santorini, where water is inescapable and omnipresent, the island slowly becomes both beginning and end of vision. Through collective research, references from photography and other fields, and daily practice, participants will work on a personal project that may remain rooted in place — or travel far beyond it.

Approaches are open: documentary narratives (fishing, tourism, migration), experimental processes using water as matter, or poetic and metaphorical explorations.
Photographers and practitioners from all fields are welcome.
A shared research space, a temporary community, and a journey of transformation — through image, place, and encounter.

FINAL CALL — LAST SPOTS AVAILABLE
IMAGES IN RELATION: EXPLORING CONNECTIONS — PERSONAL & COLLECTIVE
with Hoda Afshar

This workshop invites artists to deepen their practice by exploring the personal dimensions of their work alongside the wider social, cultural, and political contexts we inhabit together.
How does your work emerge from your lived experience?
How does it respond to the world around you?
Where do the personal and the collective meet?
Over several intensive days, participants will:
— Present past & current projects to identify recurring questions and visual strategies
— Develop evolving mind maps with notes, references, and images
— Trace connections between personal narratives and shared human concerns
— Engage in short walks & photographic exercises
— Reflect and respond to one another in real time
Through this process, artistic practice is approached as both:
• an evolving understanding of the self
• and a turning outward — an attentiveness to the world before us
The images we make, the conversations we share, and the experiences we gather will continuously feed back into our maps — reinforcing the idea that art exists in relation: to oneself, to others, and to the world.

DANA LIXENBERG AT THE MEP ⭐️

From 11 February 2026, discover the exhibition American Images, the first retrospective of Dutch photographer Dana Lixenberg.

Her photographs — ranging from Tupac Shakur and Allen Ginsberg to Ivana Trump, from the residents of Watts to communities in Alaska — offer a multifaceted portrait of contemporary America, far removed from dominant representations. Celebrities and anonymous subjects alike are photographed with the same attention, without sets or artifice: these stripped-back portraits resist easy interpretations and reveal the humanity of each individual.

Dana Lixenberg — American Images will be on view from 11 February to 24 May 2026 at the MEP – Maison Européenne de la Photographie. 📆

This exhibition is co-produced with Fundación MAPFRE in Barcelona and Madrid and supported by and
