The Return of the White Deer: When this piebald deer showed up in our backyard eight months ago at first glance I thought it was a goat! (second photo) It reappeared recently accompanied by a couple of normal tan ones.

In this episode, host Ruby Tugade speaks with Helen Glazer, an artist whose work bridges art, science, and the natural world. She describes a lifelong pattern of moving toward the edge of what she doesn’t yet know how to do, where uncertainty signals discovery rather than doubt.

There was also a formative cross-country trip as a teenager that exposed her to communities living in very different circumstances across the United States, deepening her understanding of privilege, resilience, and shared dignity.
More recently, Helen brings her curiosity to Antarctica and Greenland, documenting landscapes formed by ice, time, and climate change, and exploring how powerful natural and human forces influence what we see and are.

This is a conversation about curiosity, and following questions across a lifetime.

Cops in niches, 1930 and 1988, from my trip to Yale University for a reunion. I revisited the humorous stone carvings I used to walk past when I was student that decorate street level windows of the Yale Law School building. Then I stopped into the Yale University Art Gallery, where I saw this spirited painting, "La Vida," by the late Martin Wong, where among the various New Yorkers filling every window are a pair of policemen. Scroll to see the other details and full images of the window and painting.

Last weekend I visited the Yale University campus for my class reunion. Walking past the buildings brought back memories, including the humorous gargoyles decorating the "Collegiate Gothic" style buildings built in the 1920s and '30s. Here's a selection of students with animal heads perched on roof peaks of the Yale Law School. The Italian immigrant stonemasons and carvers clearly had fun with the project!

Silver argiope spider, Newport Beach, California. There were a lot of these in the bushes this weekend beside the walking path. According to the UC Irvine website, the little zigzag in the web is probably to alert birds not to fly into the web.

Sometimes you luck out with the view from the airplane. On the way to the Nevada Art Museum Art + Environment conference, the late morning light revealed the varied geology in rich colors and textures of this part of the American West.
