Greenland's film workers association - FILM.GL - was established in late 2012. The initiative came as a direct consequence of increased film production activities in Greenland in the previous years - ranging from ambitious feature films such as “Nuummioq” and “Qaqqat Alanngui” to low-budget home productions as “Tikeq, Qiterleq, Mikileraq, Eqeqqoq”. Film production companies were popping up all ove
r Greenland. Along with the growing number of films and interest for Greenlandic filmmaking abroad, the need for a unionizing of the Greenlandic film industry became increasingly more obvious. Financial turmoil on the “Nuummioq”-production had left the production company, 3900 Pictures, bankrupt, and even though the movies “Hinnarik Sinnattunilu” and “Qaqqat Alanngui” turned out very successful in Greenland, both productions were accomplished at a very high risk level for the small company behind the movies, Tumit Production. The founders of FILM.GL wanted the film industry in Greenland to speak with one voice. In a union, the filmmakers could influence the country’s decision makers to meet the demands of the film industry itself. Within the first year a number of initiatives were launched focusing on cooperation with the Nordic countries. A series of meetings were held with the Danish Film Institute about advisory services to Greenlandic film producers, and a plan to arrange a workshop to initiate international co-production agreements was revealed. In September 2014 FILM.GL elected a new board, and the association sent representatives to a West Nordic producers' workshop in Reykjavik. As a consequence of this workshop, a cooperation scheme for a talent development programme within the Nordic countries is now in process. The association is working to organize a number of workshops in 2015 to strengthen international financing possibilities for Greenlandic producers. Furthermore in 2015 an initiative to launch a workshop in cooperation with NAPA (The Nordic Institution in Greenland) on Greenland as a location for films will be taken. And the association will investigate opportunities of creating a more streamlined film distribution system in Greenland.
