🇬🇭 Major (Rtd) Sulemana Abubakari
Major (Rtd) Sulemana Abubakari was a respected Ghanaian leader who played significant roles both in the military and traditional leadership.
Born in 1943 in Tali, near Tolon in the Northern Region of Ghana, Major Abubakari’s journey was marked by dedication to service and leadership. He started his education in Tolon before moving to Kalpohini Middle School in Tamale, which set the foundation for his later accomplishments.
His career began in the Ghana Armed Forces, where he rose to the rank of Major and served as the Officer Commanding the Recce Regiment, one of the most important units in the military.
After retiring from the military, Major Abubakari made a smooth transition into traditional leadership, becoming the Regent of Tolon in June 2001. For 18 years, he served as the acting chief of the Tolon traditional area, a responsibility he carried with honor and respect. He was officially enskinned as the Tolon-Naa (Chief of Tolon) on March 25, 2019, by the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II. The Tolon Paramount chief is said to be the Army chief of the defence forces of the Dagbang kingdom.
Although there have been some rumors about his involvement in political matters, particularly regarding the 1979 coup attempt against President Jerry John Rawlings, He has publicly denied long-standing rumors that he tortured former President Jerry John Rawlings following the failed coup attempt of May 15, 1979. Generally, soldiers of his era regard him as one of the bravest soldiers ever.
His life story was one of dedication, service, and leadership, and he earned higher recognition in Dagbang because of his principles and zero acceptance of plot sales in Tolon.
On Sunday the 23rd of August 2026, the revered Paramount chief took the way of his ancestors.
