PIELI: OVERVIEW

My first review will be on OBL's masterpiece, Pieli. Not only is it a great film, but it’s the first and best of its kind, (Dagbanli series).

Our producers always have long and good stories, but they go all the way with the parts. Sometimes it leads us to an infinite end. I am not much concerned about the parts, what am concerned about is two parts, parts one and two making up ssometimes less than an hour. I know it’s the budget but it’s always better to spend much on an average than to waste less on a less average.
With these endless/long-taking parts, I always ask myself why not series/seasonal? (Maybe it’s because I love series.) Looking at the love for telenovelas and TV series, we could have risen with any.

I was more than excited when OBL announced the premiere of the northern first TV. I was like, “what?” Especially when they just finished releasing ‘Gonda Shege'. I knew it was going to be a masterpiece and I wasn’t disappointed, (the disappointment came later on)
The series, as it’s presumed (contain only one episode), was a great one. Not only did it put our producers on their toes, but it opened we, the viewers to a new dimension in the Dagbani movie industry, and also sold Dagban to the world, (can you imagine entertainment analysts recommending Pieli for Oscar?) It had five nominations for the Ghana movie awards, (making it the first film to get five nominations at a time in the nation). Visual effect, Best picture, Custome and wardrobe, Make-up and Hairstyle, and Discovery categories of the award scheme. Although it only won the ‘Custome and Wardrobe category', it has achieve a lot for it nominations. (If it was continued who knows what it would have done, maybe it would have gone through the Oscar and winning)

I enjoyed this single episode series until the unfortunate happened. For good two years there was no continuity and no explanation (I haven’t heard any) to the reason of it (to continuation). “patients,” I tell myself, “series take time,” but for years now since it premiere in 2016, we wondering what happened to Pieli.
We the fans of the Dagbanli movie industry and Pieli as well are eager and ready all the time for the good news, it continuity.

It has been long since we hear from the team, OBL of the series. As a fan, I think we need to let them know how this series means to us, let’s pressure them to at least explain things to us.

The hash tag riots have gain a lot of victory, I call upon all fans of the Northern movie industry to push with me the hashtags and let’s see weather OBL value us (the viewers) or not. It will not only push OBL but will also force our producers to give us better movies which are worthy of fighting for.

Let's go with the hashtags;

Let’s go, go to your profile with the above hash tags, let’s fight for Dagban.
I will be doing more writings on this page, join Alfoni yeltoɣa for more on Pieli and others.

THE GROWTH OF THE DAGBANI MOVIE INDUSTRY

I always see Dagbani movies as sequels/continuity of one another. The similar storylines and recast with similar/same roles and the same character names. The similar endings which make them predictable and sometimes not interesting at all, make most of the movies the same. And this made me not to like them.

Dagbani movies when watched with much attention, one will see appearance of other movies. From the famous movie 'Nnena' to 'Malechunchuni' (another famous movie), one could see a link between these two. Although Nnena's (the character) appearance was not seen as a cameo, (she had a different role, and her father was one of the men she tortured in 'Nnena'), one could still see the link. One could say after the defeat of Malechunchuni, Nnena became the beast taking over Malechunchuni’s mantle although they had different missions. Many movies have more similarities than these but that is the best example I can give for now.

Not forgetting the famous battle between Ahmed Saani Minister and Zimboo De Don . I know, they were great and interesting and will still be if it happens again. The people needed such and we still do although we are not getting it, (I bet you if the two appears again as rivals especially with Mr.Razak, it’s going to be a hit). Am just saying they seem like a cameo to me, I see them like one movie with different timelines and actions (maybe due to somethings not told)

What I am saying here is that, the industry has grown for the past decade and is still growing, (in my perspective). I now see the industry as a serious one.

The emergence of great production teams like, OBL STUDIOS , , Sagani TV , King Faisal production, Gbewaa Films , Agbaa etc. have brought a lot of changes. Some of the old producers are copping, especially Marvelous whom for the past decade has not been really active but have tried to make their little effort unique.

Although some still practice such styles taking a look at the ‘Nabawura’ issue, which carries the same story across almost every movie she finds herself. This ‘Nabawura’ issue has been a headache to me as I try to figure out what they were trying to pass through. It went through development (as I see it) to the extent that she latter accepted the name, (this sounds like continuations of the previews)

Another example can be seen with the Mr. Ibu, foolishness and dance moves. We can mention a lot.

(But) the production teams mentioned earlier and more with their directors and producers, are working realy hard to give us the best and an African standard, (if not international). Gonda Sheege, Simzim, Muskaan, Ablai Kogu, just to mention a few have been superfluous.

Also the introduction of Dagbanli Cinema and Northern Ghana Entertainment Awards have been a great development.

The industry needs more support and encouragement. Let’s love what they do!

My special salutations to the actors and the behind the scene workers that try to bring us such enjoyments. Thank you!

Join us at Alfoni yeltoɣa as we discuss the Dagbon movie industry. Who knows, it could be a source of encouragement, improvement or a way of showing appreciation for their hard work.

I will be writing reviews of the movies I watch soon, like the page to join me.
You can live a comment of any kind. I stand corrected, at all times.
