Yilo Krobo And Manya Krobo Hold Stakeholder Meeting With Ghana Water Company
The Yilo Krobo and Manya Krobo Municipalities today, the 15th of June 2021 held a stakeholder meeting with the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in Somanya to brainstorm the acute water problem faced by the two Krobo lands in recent times.
It could be recalled, that the Information Services Department (ISD), Yilo Krobo office, through its situation report dated 19th April 2021 reported on water problem in the Yilo Krobo Municipality which appeared to be creating tension among some cross section of the Municipality especially in the Municipal Capital, Somanya where many houses connected with taps had not seen water flowed through their taps for weeks and in some cases for months. The situation had not seen any significant improvement ever since as many areas including Trom where the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly is located have not seen water flowed through their taps for weeks and months.
This development necessitated yet another stakeholder meeting today (third in the year) with the Ghana Water Company and with the Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Seth Kwame Acheampong in attendance this time around. Also in attendance were the MCEs of Yilo Krobo and Lower Manya Krobo; Hon. Ebenezer Tetteh Kupualor and Hon. Simon Tetteh respectively and the NPP Second Vice Chairman of the Eastern Region, Mr. Richard Twum Barimah Koranteng (a native of Yilo Krobo) who is also the current Executive Secretary of the Volta River Authority Resettlement Trust Fund (VRA RTF) as well as the Eastern Regional Director of the Ghana Water Company (Ing. Asomani Nyarko), a representative from Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC), the Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD) for Yilo Krobo, the Presiding Members for both Yilo Krobo and Manya Krobo Assemblies and some Chiefs inter alia.
Some participants at the forum lamented that though the two sister districts were located close to the Volta River where water is pumped by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) for distribution to its customers across the country, the Yilo Krobo and Manya Krobo for sometimes now have been experiencing water problem; something they found it difficult to understand. The discussion however revealed that obsolete pipe lines and old pipe lines meant for small population in the past which are still being used and illegal connections had been responsible in part for the problem. Both the Eastern Regional Minister and the Eastern Regional Director of the GWCL acknowledged the need for rehabilitation and expansion of the water facility in the Krobo enclave but were quick to add that this could not be done if people continue to evade paying their water bills either deliberately or through illegal connections to enable the GWCL leverage the needed resources for such rehabilitation and expansion works. The Regional Minister, Hon. Seth Kwame Acheampong made the point, that unless there was a political intervention, the GWCL as a company limited by guarantee has to do its expansion and rehabilitation works on its own balance sheet and this can only be possible if people pay their water bills. The Regional Minister however promised that all concerns raised at the stakeholder meeting would be taken up for redress.
However, in order to facilitate quick responses to issues in connection with water in the region, the GWCL said it is rolling out a telegram platform that is capable of hooking over two thousand (2,000) people and urged its customers including opinion leaders to hook onto the platform so that they can report any challenge faced in the production of water for quick and real time response.
Also, to facilitate easy payment of WATER BILLS the GWCL said it had signed up for short codes through various communication networks to enable customers pay their Water Bills from the comfort of their homes without having to travel to the offices of the GWCL to pay their bills. These short codes include; MTN MOBILE MONEY (*170 #), AIRTELTIGO MONEY (*110 #), VODAFONE CASH (*110 #).
The Regional Minister, Hon. Seth Kwame Acheampong had also disclosed at the meeting that he has lots of initiatives for the two sister districts and indicated that the two districts have about Thirty Million Ghana Cedis (GHC30m) accruing from the Odugbasi Limestone Mining as royalties sitting in an escrow accounts which could not be assessed all this while because of some issues and said that he was determined to ensure that the said money is released to the beneficiary districts so it can be used for development projects including improvement on water conditions in the Krobo lands.
