The history of Gaza is a long and complex one, involving many different peoples, empires and events. Here is a brief summary of some of the main historical periods and events that shaped Gaza's past and present:
- Gaza was originally a Canaanite settlement that came under the control of the ancient Egyptians for about 350 years. It was then conquered by the Philistines, a seafaring people who gave their name to Palestine. Gaza became one of their main cities and a center of trade and culture.
- Gaza was later ruled by various empires, such as the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Crusaders, Mamluks and Ottomans. It was often a place of war and peace between rival powers and a place of religious diversity and tolerance. Gaza was also a hub of learning and philosophy, especially during the Greek period.
- In 1948, after the creation of Israel, Egypt took control of Gaza and thousands of Palestinian refugees fled there from their homes in what became Israel.
