HOGBETSOTSO FESTIVAL
The Festival is celebrated on the first Saturday if the month of November every year. The traditional drumming and dancing, cheering crowds, palanquins in different shapes and sizes and singing of traditional war song combine to make the HOGBETSOTSO festival a must-no-be-missed spectacle.
The HOGBETSOTSO festival is used by the Anlos to commemorate the exodus and the bravery of their traditional rulers, who through endurance and sacrifice delivered them from the despot of King Agorkoli.
HOGBETSOTSO reminds the Anlos of the ancestry. It rekindles the bond of relationship that existed between them and other Ewe-speaking people and also affords the citizens the opportunity to appraise their development programmes in the past year.
One of the most significant rituals that precedes the HOGBETSOTSO festival is a state divination which is performed by distinguished seers selected from major towns throughout the 36 Anlo states.
Once the seer have announced the rituals that need to be carried out, the traditional priests perform the appropriate ceremony invoking the gods of the land.
After that, all the seers gather at Atiteti on the estuary of the Volta Lake to perform additional sacrifices.
Another important ritual is the state cleansing and sanitation programme known as " Dodede and Apekplorkplor" which is also performed by recognized seers.
On the last Thursday before the day of the durbar, the ritual performed is aimed at social reconciliation.
This activity is aimed at reconciling individuals and groups within the 36 Anlo states.
Anloga, a town marked by the meandering lagoon and golden sand beaches overhanging the Atlantic ocean, Is where the grand durbar is held on every first Saturday in November.
This year is going to be another wonderful experience and you can't miss it.

Agbadza is an Ewe music and dance that evolved from the times of war into a very popular recreational dance.
is one of the most famous Ewe rhythm and dance and the official cultural dance of the Ewe people located in the Southern Volta and the Anlo and the Avenor.
It came from a very old war dance called Atrikpui and usually performed by the Ewe people of the Volta Region of Ghana. In addition, it is also performed by Togolese and Beninese of Ewe descent.
The dance has five movements in performing it...
which is a short introductory in prayer to the gods and ancestors
which is the main dance,
- which is less energetic and only the master is made to drum along with Gankogui and Axatse,
- historical songs are performed along with Gankogui and Atoke
- finally, another round of the main dance which usually last for a number of hours.

VOLTA IS BLESSED 💎❤️

The adavatram (‘madness has overtaken me’) is no ordinary drum. It has seven human skulls tied around it and human elbow bones are used to play it.

This war drum is associated with mostly the ewedome.

Now because there are no wars, they play it at the funeral of chiefs and warlords.
The adavatram is played only seven times and no ordinary person can dance to it. Only chiefs, elders and great warriors, or those possessed by the ancestral spirits, may dance to its music.
It is usually played at midnight, and before it is played strangers are warned to stay away from the proceedings.
Are this things not nice about our culture and Heritage..
Why are we forgetting our culture, our Forefathers and our Ancestors?
Let's wake up and protect our Culture🤲❤️🍀
