IT'S TONIGHT!

The Foundation for Contemporary Art (FCA) – Ghana invites you to the screening of ‘Accra Trane Station’

Accra Trane Station: The Music and Art of Nii Noi Nortey, a 60 minute film by Steven Feld, original release 2009; remixed and remastered in 4K for rerelease, 2024. Filmed in Accra, Ghana and New Mexico, USA 2005-2008. Distributed by der.org

Accra Trane Station distills three years of conversations (2005-2008) between the Ghanaian multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Nii Nortey and the American researcher and musician Steven Feld. The African legacy of the African American saxophonist and creator John Coltrane is presented through Nii Noi's art and musical performances with his long-time percussionist Nii Otoo Annan, with Ghanaba, with the La Drivers Union Por Por Group, and on tour with American jazz artists.
The original film was first outdoored by FCA in 2009. Fifteen years later, we are very happy to present the newly remastered edition. Screening to be followed by conversation with Nii Noi Nortey and filmmaker Steven Feld.

Date: Friday 16 August, 1pm - 3.30pm
Venue : Foundation for Contemporary Art, Accra.

There is great courage and skill in crafting stories that mirror our individual and collective lives. As African readers and writers, what contemporary issues do we encounter in literature today? How do we capture the essence of a time or place? Drawing inspiration from Ama Asantewa Diaka’s Someone Birthed Them Broken, Akwaeke Emezi’s The Death of Vivek Oji and Ama Ata Aidoo’s No Sweetness Here we delve into the internal and external worlds of characters wrestling with topics that serve both their undoing and rebuilding. Join us as we gather around these texts and explore the stories we want to craft too in a non-judgemental environment. Participants do not have to be experienced readers or writers, but to possess the joy of storytelling – how ever they engage with it. There’ll be reading, writing, chatting & snacking. Facilitated by Marcelle Mateki Akita. Produced by Elizabeth Johnson. In partnership with Africa Writes UK.

Go ahead and register.

The Foundation for Contemporary Art (FCA) – Ghana is delighted to present ‘A Million Strokes and Visuals from the Future’, an exhibition of drawings by Al Hassan Issah.

This exhibition delves into the relationship between lines and surfaces, showcasing the evolution of Issah's drawings into three-dimensional forms. He treats his drawing practice as both preliminary stages leading to actual works of art and as an independent, creative medium.

Comprising over a hundred charcoal and ink drawings on paper, the exhibition offers insight into Issah’s expansive and open-ended approach to art. His work demonstrates how concepts and ideas emerge and transform with relative ease.

```Godelive Kasangati K. and the Foundation for Contemporary Art (FCA)-Ghana invite you to an intervention in our project space, opening this Saturday July 20.2024.
The considerations for this show, entitled``` ‘*_How much do you weigh?_*’ ```follow the Kasangati’s speculative research interests in the Basenji dog of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
“What happens when an image becomes part of an ‘imagery complex’? Does it allow us to see reproduction as a method of constructing a speculative archive?”```
‘*_How much do you weigh?_*’ ```is a place where balance becomes performative through its status as a reproduced image, projecting the argument towards the idea of distributing reproduced images.
Admission is free! Please consider coming through.
IT'S TODAY!
🚨 Intervention Alert
‘in relation’ by Naa Teki Lebar
opening: Mar 25.2024
time: 06.00pm GMT
where: FCA-Ghana
“in relation” presents new chapters in Naa Teki Lebar’s ongoing series, “Family Meetings,” alongside new bodies of work, developed during her residency. It touches on topics of identity, ambiguity and belonging. “Family Meetings,” a photographic series Lebar began in 2013 when she moved in with her grandmother in Accra (having grown up in Austria), offers diary-like recordings and intimate perspectives of finding oneself in new and sometimes conflicting roles: stranger, observer, newcomer, but also family member: granddaughter, niece, cousin.
Photography in this body of work serves as a ritual of integrating into family life and becomes a language, a fractal artifact, a tool for crafting fiction and an extension of Lebar’s journey into familial order.
In the wake of recent familial losses, the photographs take on an added dimension: They become keepsakes and cherished relics, holding what cannot be held anymore.
This residency programme is developed under the auspices of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport & is hosted by the Foundation for Contemporary Art - Ghana.
Join us for Mmofra Foundation's "Book Stroll" on March 16, 2024, from 1:00pm to 5:00pm at Place in Dzorwulu.
The event features African-themed books displayed in a large format that allows for an immersive reading experience. As you walk from page to page, you can dive into stories that celebrate African culture and heritage. This activity is a great way to celebrate literacy beyond the classroom walls and watch learning flourish in the heart of our community.
The Book Stroll is designed to make reading fun for children of all ages. Along with the large books, there will be other games such as puzzles, scrabble, scavenger hunts, and dancercise to make learning enjoyable. The Accra World Book Capital Project has endorsed this activity.
It is absolutely FREE!!
Mmofra Foundation, rooted in the vision of the late Efua T. Sutherland, continues to champion the cause of children in Ghana. Through events like the Book Stroll, we strive to reflect the world of our children while fostering their cultural and intellectual growth.
Mmofra Foundation’s Book Stroll is supported by Sarah Warren, Catherine Urdahl, Friends of Mmofra, Afram Publications, Healthbridge, Foundation for Contemporary Art – Ghana, and the Accra World Book Capital.
Naa Teki is a visual artist exploring connections between personal narratives and the intricate web of broader social and political mechanisms. In her work, the gaze emerges as a central arena for negotiating power discourses, social significance, and identity. In her praxis, photography, text, and installations intertwine to become mediums of reflection, narration, and exploration into self-assertion and self-care.
She is a recent recipient of the Start grant for emerging artistic photographers by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service, and Sports. In 2019, she was shortlisted for the Wolf Suschitzky Photography Prize of the Austrian Cultural Forum London. Alongside her individual practice, she is a co-founder and member of the feminist screenwriters collective Spreiz.
