The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has visited the Adenta Municipality in the Greater Accra Region to monitor the commencement of payments under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) Programme.
The visit brought the Minister into direct interaction with LEAP beneficiaries, caregivers and officials at Adenta Municipal Assembly, as she observed the payment process and engaged beneficiaries on their experiences.
The beneficiary households were enrolled following the nationwide reassessment of the Programme.
Under the new six-tier payment structure, households are paid according to the size and vulnerability status. With two cycles being paid together in the current exercise:1-2 member households with vulnerability are receiving GH¢784, while those without vulnerability receive GH¢760.
Households with 3-4 members receive GH¢984 with vulnerability and GH¢904 without vulnerability, while households with 5 or more members receive GH¢1,260 with vulnerability and GH¢1,188 without vulnerability.
Speaking to the media during the visit, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey said the payment exercise was not only about disbursing funds but also about ensuring that support reached households that genuinely needed it. She noted that the reassessment had allowed households whose living conditions had improved to transition from LEAP, while creating an opportunity for other extremely poor and vulnerable households to be enrolled.
The Minister said the expansion of the Programme following the reassessment was significant and required careful monitoring to ensure that funds reached the intended beneficiaries. She also appealed to caregivers receiving payments on behalf of beneficiaries who are unable to access the funds themselves to ensure that the money reaches those beneficiaries and is used in their interest.
Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey expressed appreciation to the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Ramadan Adam, Adenta Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Ella Christine Esinam Nongo, as well as social welfare officers, caregivers and beneficiaries for their cooperation throughout the reassessment and payment process. She explained that household circumstances can change over time, making regular assessment important to ensure that social protection support continues to reach those who need it.
The Minister urged beneficiaries to make prudent use of the grants to meet their household needs, while encouraging caregivers and local officials to protect the integrity of the payment process so that the support reaches those for whom it is intended.
Beneficiaries with concerns about their payments, enrolment or verification can contact their Community Focal Persons or District Social Welfare Offices, or call 0800-800-800/0800-900-900 and 0303969399.
