The first major separation within the Church, known as the Great Schism, occurred in 1054, resulting in two divisions: the Western Church (Roman Catholic) and the Eastern Church (Orthodox).
While the Western Church remained under the leadership of the Pope in Rome, the Eastern Church was led by 9 Patriarchs representing different regions. Among them, the Patriarch of Constantinople who held the title of “first among equals” and served as the spiritual leader of the Orthodox Church.
Over the centuries, there have been significant efforts toward ecumenical reconciliation between the two churches. During his reign, Pope Francis has played a notable role in fostering dialogue and unity.
Today, in a historic moment, the Patriarchs of the Orthodox Church, led by Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople, joined the procession of Cardinals from St. Peter’s Basilica to St. Peter’s Square, where the Funeral Mass for Pope Francis is currently underway.
