🔴 On 11 June at 19:00, Art Foundation Anagi will host the official closing of its main exhibition, “Repression and Free Will.”

As part of the closing programme, Mariam Natroshvili and Detu Jincharadze’s video work “The Revenant is Going to Come” will be screened in the Foundation’s Cinema Hall.

Using digital technologies and archival material, the project brings to life key events in Tbilisi between 1921 and 1991. As the artists note, “the video explores and observes what remains unfinished – what haunts the present, is endlessly repeated, and denies the future any rest.”

დახურვის ღონისძიების ფარგლებში, ფონდის ამფითეატრში გაიმართება მარიამ ნატროშვილისა და დეთუ ჯინჭარაძის ვიდეონამუშევრის – “The Revenant is Going to Come” (“აჩრდილი ბრუნდება”) ჩვენება.

ციფრული ტექნოლოგიებისა და საარქივო მასალის გამოყენებით, პროექტი ჩვენს თვალწინ 1921-1991 წლების თბილისის ყველაზე მნიშვნელოვან მოვლენებს აცოცხლებს. ავტორების თქმით, “ვიდეო იკვლევს და აკვირდება იმას, რაც არ დასრულებულა და აწმყოზეა ადევნებული, მუდმივად მეორდება და მომავალს მოსვენებას უკარგავს”.

🔴 On 11 June, Art Foundation Anagi will host the official closing of its main exhibition, “Repression and Free Will”.

The exhibition traces the histories of artists repressed during the so-called Red Terror (1937–1938) and follows the complex and often interrupted development of Georgian abstraction under Soviet rule.

It examines the tension between individual agency and the coercive mechanisms of the state, opening up a space for reflection on memory, collective trauma, and the critical reappraisal of the past.

🔴 დღეს, 5 ივნისს, 18:00 საათზე, ფონდის სივრცეში გაიმართება გამოფენის თანაკურატორის, ხელოვნებათმცოდნე კონსტანტინე ბოლქვაძის საჯარო ლექცია და საკურატორო ტური – “აბსტრაქცია და საბჭოთა კაზუსები”.

შეხვედრაზე საუბარი შეეხება საბჭოთა სისტემის მიერ ხელოვანის შემოქმედებითი თავისუფლების შეზღუდვის მექანიზმებსა და იმ წინააღმდეგობას, რომელიც სისტემურ რეპრესიებზე პასუხად ყალიბდებოდა.

The exhibition “Repression and Free Will,” currently on view at the Art Foundation Anagi, will remain open through June 11, 2026.

As part of the project, the Foundation continues its series of public lectures and curatorial tours.

🔴 Today, on June 5 at 6:00 PM, the Foundation’s Cinema Hall will host a public lecture and curatorial tour led by the exhibition’s co-curator and art historian Konstantine Bolkvadze, titled “Abstraction and Soviet Cases.”

The session will explore the mechanisms through which the Soviet system restricted artistic freedom, as well as the forms of resistance that emerged in response to systemic repression.

The discussion will focus on the work of Georgian abstractionists across different generations, along with both well-known and lesser-known histories of their confrontation with the Soviet regime. Soviet official discourse labelled these artists as “formalists” and subjected them to severe persecution and marginalisation.

Today, a joint exhibition by Ani Abramidze and Nika Khabelashvili opened in the Cinema Hall of the Art Foundation Anagi.

Titled “Two of Us”, the exhibition brings together mixed media, installation, and performance. Through a collaborative artistic practice, the two artists explore the intimate, social, and existential dimensions of shared life.

Drawing on their personal experience as artists and life partners, the project examines forms of coexistence and interdependence in contemporary reality.

“სიმბოლოებით დატვირთულ რეალობაში, პოსტსაბჭოური ტრავმების, ყოფიერების წნეხის, სოციალური თუ ნაციონალური კომპლექსების გაშიშვლებითა და ინერტული დინებების გააზრებით, ბიოლოგიურ და ეგზისტენციალურ თანაარსებობაში ვრჩებით ჩვენ… მხოლოდ ჩვენ ორნი…” – არტისტების განაცხადიდან.

Jibson Khundadze (1927–1992) was expelled from the Academy of Arts in his second year after his works were thrown out – punished for publicly defending the “bourgeois” art of David Kakabadze.

Khundadze belonged to the generation of artists of the 1950s–60s who introduced a new, abstract current into Georgian visual art. His “formalist” pursuits continued to bring him into conflict with the system.

Later, during the so-called Khrushchev Thaw, Khundadze worked primarily on abstract landscapes, echoing the visual language of Kakabadze.

From the 1970s–80s onward, he further developed his abstract practice, remaining committed – until the end of his life – to the very “formalism” condemned by the Soviet regime.

ჯიბსონ ხუნდაძეს (1927-1922) სამხატვრო აკადემიდან ნამუშევრები გარეთ გაუყარეს და მეორე კურსიდან გარიცხეს იმის გამო, რომ დავით კაკაბაძის “ბურჟუაზიულად” შერაცხული ხელოვნება საჯაროდ დაიცვა.

ხუნდაძე 1950-60-იანელ მხატვართა იმ თაობის წარმომადგენელია, რომელმაც ქართულ სახვით ხელოვნებაში ახალი, აბსტრაქტული ტალღა შემოიტანა. “ფორმალისტური” ძიებების გამო, მხატვარს შემდგომშიც უამრავი პრობლემა შეექმნა.

მოგვიანებით, ე.წ. ხრუშჩოვის დათბობის პერიოდში, ხუნდაძე მხოლოდ აბსტრაქტულ პეიზაჟებს ხატავდა, რაც კაკაბაძის ენას მოგვაგონებს.

1970-80-იანი წლებიდან, მხატვარმა აბსტრაქტული სტილი კიდევ უფრო განავითარა და სიცოცხლის ბოლომდე საბჭოთა სისტემის მიერ მოძულებული “ფორმალიზმის” ერთგული დარჩა.

🔴 ჯიბსონ ხუნდაძის ნამუშევრების ნახვა შესაძლებელია 12 ივნისის ჩათვლით, ფონდში მიმდინარე გამოფენაზე “რეპრესია და თავისუფალი ნება”.
