Which facts did you knew about Van Gogh? π
1. He didn't achieve fame during his lifetime. Vincent van Gogh sold only one painting, The Red Vineyard, while he was alive. His fame grew significantly in the years after his death, largely due to exhibitions organized by his sister-in-law, Johanna van Gogh-Bonger.
2. He had a tumultuous relationship with Paul Gauguin. Van Gogh invited fellow artist Paul Gauguin to live with him in the "Yellow House" in Arles, France. Their collaboration was short-lived and ended dramatically with a heated argument.
3. He cut off part of his ear. Following the argument with Gauguin, Van Gogh famously mutilated his own ear. The exact details of the incident are still debated, but it's believed he severed a portion of his left earlobe and gave it to a woman named Rachel at a nearby brothel.
4. He struggled with mental health issues. Van Gogh suffered from a severe mental illness, which is now widely believed to have been a form of bipolar disorder, epilepsy, or psychosis. He spent time in various mental hospitals and asylums, including the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-RΓ©my-de-Provence.
5. He was incredibly prolific. Despite his short artistic career (only about 10 years), Van Gogh created an astonishing number of works: over 2,100 pieces of art, including about 860 oil paintings.
