Ahead of the exhibition “No Animals Were Harmed” by Alexander Florensky, opening on April 25 at 19:00, we are sharing a few facts about the artist.
Alexander Florensky was born in Saint Petersburg (Leningrad) in 1960. He graduated from the ceramics department of the Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design (formerly the Mukhina School) in 1982. He is one of the founders of the artist group “Mitki” (1985). In 1995 he founded the publishing house “Mitkilibris”, and in 1997 — the “Mitki-Vkhutemas” gallery in Saint Petersburg.
Since 1994, Florensky has collaborated with Olga Florensky on large-scale projects, including “Russian Patent”, “Local Time”, “Mobile Bestiary”, “Anatomical Person”, “Russian Trophy”, “Cult Structures”, “Jerusalem”, and “NY”. In 2004, together with artist Ivan Sotnikov, he founded the “Society of Lovers of Painting and Drawing”, and in 2008, with printer Dmitry Bugaenko — the silkscreen studio “B&F”.
Since 2022, he has been the curator of LICHT GALLERY. His works are held in major museum collections, including the State Russian Museum, the Hermitage, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Kiasma (Helsinki), the National Gallery of Georgia (Tbilisi), the Zimmerli Art Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum (London).
The artist lives and works between Tbilisi and Saint Petersburg.
