INADEQUATE LIGHTING KNOWLEDGE

WHAT ARE PROXIES?
Proxies in the context of video editing are low-bitrate (!) and low-resolution (not always) versions of your original high-bitrate and high-resolution video footage. They are easier to work with due to their smaller size, allowing smoother editing, especially on less powerful systems. After the editing process is complete, the proxies are replaced with the original high-resolution files for final export.

WHY USE PROXIES?
Proxies are a godsend for video editors dealing with 4K, 8K, or higher resolution footage, particularly on systems that lack high-end specifications. They can significantly cut down the time spent on playback, buffering, and rendering, speeding up your workflow. ORGANIZE YOUR FOOTAGE
One of the most critical steps in reviewing your footage faster is organizing your clips appropriately. Create and use clear and understandable architecture for your working project and assets. Sort your footage based on the sources of raw materials (cameras, audio recorders) and the event's sequence, and split various parts of a wedding day into various sequences. Use a consistent naming convention across all weddings to help you remember where specific footage can be found.

USE PROXIES
When working with high-resolution footage, you might encounter bad playback and slow rendering times, which could hamper your reviewing process. Using proxies, which are lower-resolution versions of your original files, can expedite your review process without sacrificing the final quality.

Hello everyone, my name is Stas, and this is my new blog.

Briefly about me in numbers: I have been editing wedding videos for 6 years, and have done so for more than 200 weddings. I took 9th place in an international competition of the best wedding videographers from around the world in 2019 in two categories.

I am also a former musician.

I have been editing wedding videos for 6 years now. Throughout that time I have always subscribed to the motto “How can I do better?” I constantly analyze myself, my work and the work of other videographers, both beginners and advanced. I have also analyzed filming and editing.

After some time, I began to notice that videographers often make the same mistakes, both in terms of filming and editing. There are always things that can be improved, which in turn will improve the wedding videos overall.

In this blog, I’m going to share my experience, knowledge base and the references that I have collected from colleagues and from cinema (knowledge about cinema is a must-have, we’ll talk about this later), so that all of us – both videographers and editors – become cooler and improve our results.

I am particularly inspired by cinema. In general, I acquired a huge part of my knowledge from professionally shot films. I believe that this is the surest way to reach a higher level: projecting knowledge from cinematography onto wedding videography. This is where I developed my eye for videography.

It’s like cooking a pizza: having traveled all over the world and visited numerous local restaurants, you can learn to cook the same food 20 times, and each time in a different way.

On top of its lower cost, Artlist also provides a free trial period.

Conclusion:
Artlist has a low entry threshold, as well as simple and convenient tools for finding the right music: just what a beginner videographer needs.

- MUSICBED -

This service is essentially Apple TV+ for the world of music services - simple, aesthetically pleasing, but expensive. Like Artlist, there are convenient filters for finding music (for example, by music genre, desired mood, video type, instruments in musical compositions, etc.). But in Musicbed, these filters have more options to customize: this is one of the main reasons I actually prefer it. Like I said earlier, the only downside is the subscription cost - it can be as much as $80/month for wedding filmmakers, or $60 for a one-time purchase of a single license.

Conclusion:
if you are a beginner or just an amateur making a wedding video as a gift for a friend, then I recommend some of the more financially accessible services… however, for everyone else, this is the one for you!

- EPIDEMIC SOUND -

The basic subscription for $9/month provides a license for several sites at once. Creators can use music for YouTube, Instagram and Twitch. For commercial wedding video projects, you will need to purchase an appropriate subscription for $230/year. The rights to audio content that you used during an active subscription remains with you even after you cancel your subscription. Every song has an instrumental version without vocals. This is very useful if you want something strictly musical in your video. Not only can you download an mp3 of the song, you can access an archive of its various audio tracks.

Conclusion:
Epidemic is the best choice for those who need high-quality music for personal purposes. Electronic and country music predominate their library, so for wedding videos it is probably better to choose something else. However, if you have a themed wedding, that's another story…

All in all, I suggest that you base your choice of service on cost and availability. If you are new to wedding video editing, I recommend Artist. You can get started quickly, and it’s cheap. However, if any of the specific features of the other services appeal to you, they are all great choices.

Premiere Pro is the gold standard in the video editing industry. It is a firm favorite of professional video editors and amateurs alike. It also happens to be my primary video editing software and offers a vast collection of tools, good interface optimization, and integration with Adobe Creative Cloud.

Premiere Pro is the most popular software for professional video editing, along with its closest competitor, Final Cut Pro, which is developed by Apple.

- FINAL CUT PRO -
Amateur and professional filmmakers alike love this editing software suite. Its major drawback is that it only works on Mac OS devices. True to Apple form, it is unlike other apps in its class and stands out for its unconventional timeline editing feature. However, once you’re familiar with it, you can expect to enjoy benefits like:

● High performance and optimization, including for older, less powerful Macs,
● Libraries, tags, ratings, and automatic scene analysis,
● High rendering speed,
● A streamlined, user-friendly interface.

- DAVINCI RESOLVE -

However, for those who do master the app, it could open the door to new career opportunities in Hollywood, where DaVinci Resolve is the go-to app for film editors.

- VEGAS PRO -
Welcome to the OG app in the world of video editing software. What was once a complex and prohibitively costly ($400[OS2]) suite with an incomprehensible interface and confusing UX text has been reconfigured to make it more accessible for beginners.
The Vegas Pro developers have actively restructured their consumer policy, simplifying and optimizing this old-school editor for newcomers to the field of wedding videos.

The latest version of the app now boasts more than ten settings tabs. Developers have added loads of “how to” content and new functions. Still, Vegas Pro remains tricky to manage and devoid of the capabilities offered by competitors. When it comes to editing wedding videos, I give this software a thumbs down.

- EDIUS -
EDIUS is the all-rounder of video editing suites. The app has a standard user interface with intuitive, clear-cut elements. It supports almost all formats: Sony XAVC/XAVC S, Panasonic AVC-Ultra, AVC-Intra LT/LT 2K, Canon Cinema Raw, Sony XDCAM, etc. This cross-functionality and the ability to immediately open a video file in Edius Pro 9 saves you precious time on converters.

The app also instantly encodes and decodes 4K videos to ensure smooth production. The downsides to this video editing software are that it’s devoid of cloud storage and only available for PC (Windows OS) devices.

- CONCLUSION -
As you can see, the various suites all have similar functionality, tools, hardware requirements, and entry threshold.

I recommend you choose an app based on your abilities, production demands, and other considerations.

For example, if your employer gives you a subscription to a complete set of professional Adobe Creative Cloud applications, it makes sense to use Premiere Pro.
