The Manchineel tree may look inviting with its shiny leaves and apple-like fruit, but it is one of the most dangerous trees in the Caribbean. Its fruit is highly poisonous and should never be eaten, while the milky sap can cause painful burns and blisters on the skin. During rainfall, water dripping from the leaves can carry the sap and cause irritation to anyone standing beneath the tree, or even during sunshine, so it’s best to keep your distance. Even burning the wood is dangerous because the smoke can irritate the eyes, skin, and lungs. Nature is beautiful, but sometimes the best way to admire it is from a safe distance.
