Hi All.
We at the Josef Herman Foundation have just finished putting up our latest exhibition, "9 Simple Acts" at the Welfare in Ystradgynlais and it is now open to view for free. The exhibition includes various works including original drawings by Josef Herman and Karol Lek and is open from today until 30th June. It is themed in supporting Refugee Week. We are also organising an afternoon tea and cake event on Friday 19th June from 2.30 - 5.00pm as our contribution to Refugee Week so please join us if you fancy a free cup of tea and a cake and see the exhibition as well. We look forward to seeing you!

Help Us Capture the Past, Present and Future of Wales’s Chapels
Take Part in the Welsh Chapel Census 2026!

The Commission has launched a major new national census of Nonconformist chapels as part of its National Lottery Heritage Fund–supported Capeli Cymru: Preserving the Nonconformist Heritage of Wales project.

The 2026 census will provide the first comprehensive national picture for over a century of the status, use, and condition of chapels across Wales. It will gather vital information on active chapels, patterns of worship and community use, membership and attendance, and the physical condition of buildings. It will also document the fate of chapels that have closed, including those that have been repurposed, demolished, or left vacant.

Building on landmark surveys from 1851 and 1905, this work will create an essential new dataset to support heritage preservation, inform future planning, and guide the sustainable use of chapel buildings.
We need your help!

You can take part by completing one of two short online questionnaires:
• A congregational survey for members of open chapels
• A general survey to report on chapels in your area
By contributing, you will help create a vital 21st-century snapshot of Wales’s chapel heritage.
Find out more and take part here: https://zurl.co/q6RtX

We encourage you to share what you know about the current and changing use of chapel buildings-your contribution will help us document Wales’s chapel heritage.

“Pontio Cenedlaethau” Diwrnod Cofio'r Holocost 2026
Ar gyfer Diwrnod Cofio'r Holocost 2026 rydym wedi curadu delweddau o'n harchif, gan Josef Herman, sy'n ymateb i’r thema “Pontio Cenedlaethau” ac wedi'u cyflwyno yma ar ein gwefan. Mae hyn yn cynnwys, er enghraifft, mam a phlentyn yn cael eu cario mewn siol traddodiadol Gymreig, unedau teuluol, mam yn bwydo babi.
Yn ogystal, mynychodd disgyblion Ysgol Gynradd Eglwys Gadeiriol San Joseff y Neuadd Les yn Ystradgynlais i ymgymryd â gweithdy celf, i ddysgu am y sefydliad, yr archif ac i gerdded o amgylch Ystradgynlais yn ôl troed Herman. Dangoswyd y delweddau wedi'u curadu o’n harchif i'r cyfranogwyr ac ei hysgogi i ymateb yn weledol i'r delweddau yn eu steil eu hunain. Gwelir y delweddau hyn isod hefyd. Mae gweithio gyda'r cyfranogwyr ysgol hyn hefyd yn pontio cenedlaethau.
"Thema 'rHolocost 2026 yw Pontio'r Cenedlaethau. Galwad i weithredu ac i'n atgoffa nad yw cyfrifoldeb cofio yn dod i ben gyda'r goroeswyr - mae'n parhau trwy eu plant, eu hwyrion a thrwy bob un ohonom."

"Bridging Generations" Holocaust memorial day 2026
For Holocaust Memorial Day 2026 we have curated images from our archive, by Josef Herman, that respond to the theme of “Bridging Generations” and presented them here on our website. This includes for example mother and child carried in the traditional Welsh 'siol' (shawl), family units, mother feeding a baby.
Additionally, St Joseph's Cathedral Primary School pupils attended the Welfare in Ystradgynlais to undertake an art workshop and to learn about the foundation, the archive and to walk around Ystradgynlais in Herman's footsteps. The participants were shown these curated images and visually responded to the images in their own style. These images are also seen below. Working with these school participants also bridges generations.
"The theme for 2026 is Bridging Generations. A call to action and reminder that the responsibility of remembrance doesn’t end with the survivors – it lives on through their children, their grandchildren and through all of us." (https://hmd.org.uk/)
