Tonight we rehearse with our soloist! 🎻

Will Clark joins York Symphony Orchestra for rehearsal ahead of Saturday’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto.

These rehearsals are where everything comes together — balancing the orchestra with the soloist, refining the musical details, and shaping the interpretation we’ll share with the audience this weekend.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote his Violin Concerto during a period of personal turmoil in 1878, shortly after leaving Moscow to recover from a difficult time in his life.

During a stay in Switzerland, inspiration struck quickly, and the concerto was composed in just a few weeks.

Despite the emotional circumstances in which it was written, the music itself is full of vitality, lyricism, and brilliant energy — which is perhaps why audiences have loved it for nearly 150 years.

One of the joys of live orchestral music is hearing the incredible variety of sounds an orchestra can create.

On Saturday, you can hear:

🪈 shimmering woodwinds depicting flowing water in Smetana’s Vltava
🎻 breathtaking violin virtuosity in Tchaikovsky’s concerto
🎺 bold brass and powerful orchestral writing in Borodin’s Symphony No. 2

Every section of the orchestra gets a moment to shine.

One of the most striking aspects of Will Clark’s performances is the dramatic stage makeup they create as part of their artistic presentation.

Remarkably, Will designs and applies the entire look themselves before each performance — a process that takes around an hour.

The result is a distinctive visual identity that complements their expressive and theatrical performance style.

We’re excited to see (and hear!) this unique artistry when Will joins York Symphony Orchestra this Saturday.

The concert concludes with the powerful Symphony No. 2 in B minor by Alexander Borodin.

Borodin had a remarkable life beyond music—he was also a respected chemist and academic. Composition was something he pursued alongside his scientific career, yet he still produced some of the most distinctive orchestral music of the 19th century.

His Second Symphony is sometimes nicknamed the “Heroic Symphony” because of its bold themes, dramatic contrasts, and triumphant energy.

Rehearsals are well underway for our March concert, and the orchestra has been busy bringing this fantastic programme to life.

Since the start of the year, we have been working on the flowing orchestral textures of Vltava, the powerful themes of Borodin’s Second Symphony, and preparing for the spectacular Violin Concerto in D major by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

There’s still plenty of time to book your tickets and join us for what promises to be a wonderful evening of live orchestral music on Saturday 28 March at 19:30 at the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall.
