The Hartlepool Monkey is one of Englandā€™s most famous (and bizarre) local legends. Itā€™s the origin of the nickname ā€œmonkey hangersā€ for people from Hartlepool in County Durham, north-east England.The LegendDuring the Napoleonic Wars (early 19th century), a French ship ā€” often described as a chasse-marĆ©e ā€” was wrecked in a storm off the coast of Hartlepool. The only survivor washed ashore was the shipā€™s pet monkey. In many versions of the tale the monkey was dressed in a little French military uniform, which the crew had put on it to amuse themselves.The fishermen and townsfolk of Hartlepool had never seen a monkey beforeā€¦ and, according to the story, had never seen a Frenchman either. They captured the creature, held an impromptu trial on the beach, and tried to interrogate it. The monkeyā€™s chattering and inability to answer their questions (in English) led them to conclude it must be a French spy. Found guilty, the animal was sentenced to death and hanged on the beach.

Really.All laces must now be tightened to between 1.1ā€“1.5Nm using a certified Shoe Lace Torque Wrench (SLTW). Over-tightening is a fine. Under-tightening is a fine. Using your fingers like some kind of caveman is a fine.Police will be carrying portable lace torque testers on the street. Fail the test and itā€™s a Ā£150 on-the-spot fine + compulsory lace recalibration course.Iā€™ve just ordered mine.
