York Mystery Plays

York Mystery Plays York Festival Trust, on behalf of York's 7 Guilds has been bringing the Mystery Plays to the City streets every 4 years since 1998.

The internationally recognised York Mystery Plays will return in 2022 to once again fill the city streets with drama and spectacle, offering a truly unique experience for visitors and locals alike.

We can’t wait! The plays kick off this Sunday!

You can catch performances at the following locations:

1. Minster Refectory Gardens (near the Minster Rose Window) — Free

2. King’s Square — Free

3. St Sampson’s Square (outside Browns department store at the end of Parliament Street) — Free

4. Dean’s Park — Ticketed entry

🕥 Start: 10:30am
🕠 Finish: Approximately 5:30pm

Come along and enjoy a fantastic day of performances across the city!

How it works:
There are 10 short plays on medieval style waggons Journey from one location to the next, stopping at each one to perform. Many are escorted by medieval musicians.
if you stay in one of the performance spaces you will see all 10 plays in cycle as they will come to you - feel free to bring a chair or a stool!

Rehearsals are going really well, with everyone working hard on the crucifixion scene, which is one of the most powerful moments in the production. It's been great to see the cast bringing such commitment and focus to the action, especially during the lifting of the cross. Under Maurice Crichton's direction, the York Settlement Community Players are making excellent progress and creating something truly moving.

Not long to go now!

The cast of 'The war in Heaven' from HIDden Theatre
are working hard on putting their play togther!

The War in Heaven:

God creates Heaven, Earth and Hell, and forms nine orders of angels, placing Lucifer above them all as Lord of Light. But Lucifer's pride and ambition grow until he seeks honour equal to God.

As punishment, Lucifer and his followers are cast down into Hell, losing their beauty and splendour. While the faithful angels understand God's judgement, God turns to his next great task: creating Earth as a home for mankind, beginning with the creation of night and day.

This is A dramatic tale of pride, fall and creation you can catch it on Sunday the 28th of June and Sunday 5th July 2026!
