York Art Gallery

York Art Gallery In 1892 it became the City Art Gallery. York Art Gallery underwent a major redevelopment prior to its grand reopening on 1 August 2015.

York Art Gallery’s collection of paintings spans more than 600 years and works range from 14th century Italian panels and 17th century Dutch masterpieces to Victorian narrative paintings and 20th century works by LS Lowry and David Hockney. We also hold the most extensive and representative collection of British Studio Ceramics, thanks to the acquisition of collections from Dean Milner–White, WA I

smay and Henry Rothschild and the recent long term loan of Anthony Shaw’s collection. The building which houses the gallery opened its doors to the public in 1879 for the second Yorkshire Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition, inspired by the Great Exhibition in London of 1851. The project enabled the creation of 60% more display space, new gardens and a Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA). Find out more: www.yorkartgallery.org.uk

Today, on her birthday, we're celebrating Gwen John (1876–1939), one of the most significant British artists of the early twentieth century. ✨

Born in Wales and working for much of her career in France, John developed a distinctive artistic style characterised by quiet, intimate portraits and a masterful use of colour and light. Many of her paintings focus on women, capturing moments of stillness, contemplation and everyday life.

John loved both men and women, and her relationships formed an important part of her life and identity. During Pride Month, we're reflecting on her artistic legacy and her place within LGBTQ+ history.

This painting is currently on loan, featuring in the touring exhibition 'Gwen John: Strange Beauties'. The show is currently on display at National Museum Cardiff and will open at National Galleries Scotland: Modern Two on Sat 1 August.

David Hockney 1937–2026 🤍

We are saddened to hear of the passing of David Hockney, one of Britain's most celebrated and influential artists.

We fondly remember David visiting us in 2011, when his monumental Bigger Trees Near Warter went on display at York Art Gallery. Made up of 50 separate canvases, the work captured the beauty of the East Yorkshire landscape on an extraordinary scale.

His remarkable life and legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

Thank you, David Hockney. 🌻
