Start off the bank holiday weekend in style, with not one but two Late Music concerts. Sat 2nd May - 1pm: York St John Takeover featuring Workers Union by Louis Andriessen, followed by the Late Music Ensemble at 7:30 with everything from new versions of Stravinsky and Mussorgsky to world premieres. There's nothing 'Modest' about this concert - and please join us at 6:45 for a preconcert talk with a free glass of wine or juice!

The “programmatic idea” behind Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky is – quite literally – a musical walk through an art exhibition. In 1874, Mussorgsky composed the piano suite after visiting a memorial exhibition of works by his friend, the artist and architect Viktor Hartmann,...

Late Music is getting into full swing in spring with three concerts coming up. First off at 1pm on Saturday 2nd May, we welcome the next generation of talent with a student takeover from York St John, centred around Louis Andriessen’s Workers Union. That evening at 7:30pm, the Late Music Ensemble will be reimagining Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition as part of a celebration of how visual art has inspired music. Finally, on Saturday 9th May at 1pm, tenor Christopher O’Gorman joins forces with Mark Hutchinson for a celebration of 20th and 21st century song. We hope to see you there!

Coming up in York next weekend, the UK premiere of 'Canzone Sospesa' for cello and piano. Nicola Tait Baxter and Paul Nicholson (of the Amabile trio) will include it in their programme at Late Music Concerts York on Saturday 11th April at 7:30 pm, in a programme that also includes music by David Power and Steve Crowther; I'll be giving a pre-concert talk at 6:45. This piece was first performed in Milan in 2023 by members of Trio Chimera, and subsequently twice in the USA, including a concert hosted by the Art Music Society so it will be good to hear it closer to home! After the first performance I wrote a little about it in a blog on my website, with a link to the recording. Do come along if you're free! https://www.davidcomposer.com/post/the-best-of-times
