Completing our musical lineup we have two great hymns which everyone can join in with.

Christ whose glory fills the skies to the tune of Ratisbon which is attributed to Johannes Gottlub Werther. In 1798 Werther was organist in Frohburg, in 1808 he was assistant to the cantor in Hohenstein, Saxony and in 1819 he was organist at the cathedral in Merseburg (approximately 30 years too early to have played the famous Ladegast organ).

Of the Father’s love begotten is sung to the tune Divinum Mysterium, based on a plainsong chant. The organ harmonies were arranged by Sir David Willcocks (1919 - 2015) as is the descant in the last verse sung by the sopranos and tenors. Willcocks is synonymous with many classic arrangements of Christmas carols (ask organists and choristers about ‘the chord’ and they’ll know you mean the Willcocks arrangement of verse 7 of O Come all ye Faithful and ‘Word’ of the Father…) and probably his most famous job was as Director of Music at Kings College, Cambridge. Less well known is that from 1956 to 1974 he was conductor of Bradford Festival Choral Society… another composer with a Yorkshire connection.

Candlemas marks the end of the Christmas season as we recall when Jesus, as a youngster, was presented in the Temple. Join us in worship as we reach the point in the Church year when we turn from the crib to the cross.

The responses tomorrow will be by our old friends William Smith (c. 1603 - 1645) and Edward Woodall Naylor (1867 - 1934). Two more northern composers with Smith from Durham and Naylor from Scarborough.

Smith is mainly known for his set of choral preces and responses which we will be singing but as these do not include the final responses we will be adding the set by Naylor.

Naylor’s father was an organist at York Minster and Edward Woodall Naylor won a choral scholarship to Emmanuel College, Cambridge before studying at the Royal College of Music. After holding various organist posts he returned to Cambridge as organist at Emmanuel College and an assistant master at The Leys School.
