Great day out with drawing pals at The Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, visiting the Vivienne Westwood exhibition and the Norman Cornish sketch books — both fabulous!

I’ve been coming here for years for drawing inspiration and a bit of a heritage fix, and it was wonderful to see all the work that’s been done in the galleries. There’s some brilliant curation of fashion, ceramics, paintings and lots of beautiful objects, all reimagined from the museum’s vast collection. My efforts consisted of quick sketches on pre painted paper all made in situ as the museum has handy fold up stools and good vantage points.

There’s also a gorgeous light-filled activity room for all things creative. Highly recommend if you’re looking for inspiration, history, and a lovely day out. Oh and a great cafe too!!

I’ve been really enjoying the silkscreen mono-printing process. Today I turned my grape vine drawings from the 3 materials challenge into a small series of individual prints.

I love how quick and expressive this process is — drawing directly onto the screen with watercolour paint, adding water-based wax crayons, then building up the image with layers of ink and crayon through an open screen. It’s perfect for my love of mark-making and working quickly.

I couldn’t resist turning my Great Crested Newt sketchbook paintings into a photo stencils for a new silkscreen print. I’ve been making examples for my upcoming Handprinted workshop and drawing on ideas from my book, using Indian ink on florist’s acetate to build texture and tone. An ‘armada of newts’ - happy Wednesday!

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to demonstrate my silkscreen printing process at Masham Gallery, as part of the ‘Edgeland’s exhibition, where I was showing work alongside Janis Goodman Janis Goodman and Jo Bourne Jo Bourne

I was so delighted by the response. Visitors were genuinely interested in the process, and it was a real pleasure to talk through the different stages of making a print. Among them were two members of Northallerton Camera Club, who were looking for picture opportunities and asked if they could take a few photos. The results are lovely, and they sit beautifully within the gallery’s wonderful interior.

One young visitor, who was on holiday, was completely enthralled by the printing process. His mum came back later and bought a copy of my book, fully inspired to try setting something up at home — which was such a joy to hear.

Such a lovely day out with drawing pals in Saltburn by the sea. Honestly, I’d highly recommend hiring a beach hut and finishing the day with fish and chips! There was lots of chatting, not quite so much drawing… but here are a few of my little sketchbook efforts from the day.

Gouache painting in a steaming hot garden today, surrounded by all my house plants enjoying their summer holiday outside. They’ve become my little bit of inspiration for the day — and now I’m waiting to watch the eclipse!

Day 7 — the final day of the !

Today’s theme was “Red and Green” using my green tomatoes and peppers as my starting point. I started off playing with coloured pencils and crayons, then moved into watercolour overlays.

Materials: Neocolour 2 olive crayon, Luminance pencils-orange and light green, and a brief experiment with coloured markers — which, sadly, are still not quite for me! Then the old-style watercolours came out: viridian green, cadmium orange and olive green.

And somehow blue and black sneaked in at the end… no idea how that happened! So perhaps a cheerful three-material challenge fail, but a very enjoyable final day all the same.
