Christmas in Renaissance Rome!

On Friday 11 December, Ex Corde Vocal Ensemble joins forces with The York Waits at the National Centre for Early Music as part of the York Early Music Christmas Festival for a programme of Christmas music from Renaissance Rome.

We’ll be performing music by Arcadelt, Palestrina, Victoria and de Silva, including a selection from two Christmas masses - Arcadelt's Missa Noe Noe (1557) and Palestrina's Missa Hodie Christus natus (1601) est — alongside Italian seasonal songs, lullabies and instrumental music.

Do join us for a rich musical feast of seasonal delights as we explore the contrasting worlds of grand sacred polyphony and more intimate Christmas traditions!

Our concert coming up at the National Centre for Early Music this Friday focuses on two prominent Catholic composers in Elizabethan England, Byrd and Dowland.

What’s your favourite piece of Elizabethan recusant music?

It doesn’t have to be sacred - perhaps a madrigal, song or consort piece with a hidden meaning, a coded message, or something that hints at the composer’s beliefs.

What would you choose?

We’re thrilled to be performing with lutenist Matthew Wadsworth this Friday, one of the finest proponents of his instrument.
Classic FM Magazine described his playing as “intensely focused... flowing direct from the heart', wonderful description of the remarkable intimacy and expressive power he brings to the lute.
Join us celebrating Dowland's 400th anniversary year, with a programme also featuring music by Dowland's contemporary William Byrd, and text by his contemporary Emilia Lanier set to music by Christopher Fox.

This Friday, 18 September, 19.30 National Centre for Early Music we're very excited to be giving the premiere performance of Five Humble Verses, a striking setting by Christopher Fox of five verses from Emilia Lanier’s remarkable Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum. Lanier was the first English female writer to appear in print. As well as her musical connections - born into the Bassano family and married into the Lanier family - she lays claim to being Shakespeare's 'Dark Lady' of the sonnets!

It was wonderful to be working with The York Waits on Saturday - hopefully the first of more collaborations! Here's a clip from Palestrina's gorgeous 8-part Magnificat.
