York’s current transport system needs improving… and you can help

🚗The next few months are crucial for the future of transport in York. By July 2024, the City Council will have to develop a Local Transport Plan. Before then, realistic proposals need to be made for how to tackle York’s transport problems

🚌Some of the top issues identified by residents in recent surveys include:
Pollution
Congestion
Equality of access
Safety
Visual character
Climate change

🚶Visit the Common Room and the StreetLife Hub to find out more about the issues affecting transport in York and what can be done to improve transport in and around the city.

🚲Share your thoughts on specific questions via our feedback zones and have your say on York's transport future at our interactive kiosk!

The Guateque LatAm Gig – Coming Soon to Coney Street!

🌍Join us for an evening with music from all over Latin America! 🎵

StreetLife and Reina De Cumbias have united Latin American musicians from York and across Yorkshire for a vibrant celebration of music! Get ready to immerse yourself in the music (and bring your dancing shoes!) 🎉

SATURDAY 15TH JULY | 5 PM | FREE ENTRY | @ THE STREETLIFE HUB, 29-31 CONEY STREET

About the musicians:
👑Reina de Cumbias is a Mexican and Chilean band originally based in York that now has expanded to Leeds. Reina de Cumbias focuses on a music genre called 'cumbia,' which was born in Colombia but spread all over Latin America creating a still-growing number of subgenres. Due to the lack of musical diversity in York, this project was born in 2020 to fight homesickness and isolation through music. In the last three years their music has gone from busking in Coney Street to celebrating Chilean independence day in London, and soon they will be headlining their own show in the Fulford Arms.

🎶Ana Luisa Muñoz (from Mestisa) has performed in festivals across the UK and regularly takes part in the international concert season at Leeds University's clothworker Hall. Their music has been influenced by the likes of Mercedes Sosa, Lila Downs, Inti Illimani, Los Kjarkas, Chavela Vargas as well as many traditional styles of folk music. The name “Mestisa’ comes from the Spanish word meaning to be of mixed racial and cultural origins - something that describes the band members well, and something that they try to encapsulate in their music.

🎷Salsa Express does not only play salsa, but also merengue, bachata and other Caribbean rhythms that invite dance around and have loads of fun. The band is a mix of Cuban, Dominican and Chilean members that found each other away from home and wanting to reconnect to their musical roots. After only a few months, they are now spreading the result of hours of practice, inviting people from all over the world to join the music.

🎹Duo Nostalgias is a captivating duo that takes audiences on a musical journey through vibrant landscapes, compiling a range of Latin American music. This dynamic pair consists of Barney Tabor, a skilled British accordionist and pianist, and Valentina Diaz, a talented Chilean soprano opera singer.
Together, Duo Nostalgias creates an enchanting fusion of sounds, exploring diverse genres such as tango, milonga, and Peruvian waltz, among others. Through their captivating performances, they transport audiences to distant lands, evoking a sense of nostalgia and celebrating the cultural richness of this music.

We can't wait to see you there!

Photos from Theo Miller's residency in June!

Theo Miller is a visual artist whose practice currently focuses on relief printing and letterpress! 🔤

During this residency, Theo worked with the collection of presses and type at the York Centre for Print housed at the StreetLife Hub to create a body of work.
Miller used a range of materials and processes to create the work you see here!
This included a linocut created by a singular U gouge cut that reveals a rendering of an image, as well as a range of relief prints made with a combination of metal and wood type.

✨Swipe to see more work Theo created during his residency!

Theo has been examining and researching pictorial letterpress since 2017 – looking at ways that letterpress can be used as a form of depiction. His work has been shown in exhibitions including New Impressions (Hamilton Wood Type Museum, Two Rivers, Wisconsin) and Reverting to Type 2020: Protest Posters (New North Press, London).

It was great to have Theo on the presses and we hope some of you caught him while he was here! If not, no worries... Theo will be back in the Hub soon – keep your eyes peeled for dates 👀
