Interesting! I reckon York Spoken Word was mentioned on Radio York.

Q: "How do I read at your event?"

Just show up! "Show up, sign up, and stand up when we call your name", which i said in an old TEDx on open mics and performance versus page poetry. I reckon the Radio York slot is why someone else reached out earlier this week! Here's what i have said to them.

Q: "Can anyone get up and deliver a poem at the open mic events?"
My Reply:
Gosh yes! That's why they're considered "open". Also, we, alone of most open mics in York, and open mics in general, very rarely have "features", eg well-known or up-and-coming poets who are spotlit for up to 20 mins. We treat all attendees as equal.

Having said that, we're planning on a 10 min feature slot in March. I think Bob Beagrie will be the 5th featured poet in 20 years, for an event that meets 12 times a year for a current total of 240 sessions.

You can also sign up to read and change your mind when we call your name, OR, decide to read in the 2nd half, which runs for roughly an hour from about 9ish to 10ish. People who have been there all night get a short second slot; and shyer folks have a smaller crowd to stand in front of.

We meet in person every 1st Tuesday at 7pm(ish) for a 7.30pm start, in the conservatory of the Exhibition Pub, on Gillygate. Next few are: 3 Feb, 3 March (Int'l Womens Week), 1 April, 6 May.

If only 2600 people pay £1 each for the livestream, we'll totally break even (with a decent in-person audience too)

One of my absolutely favourite poets/storytellers, Laurence Tilley * is featuring THIS THURSDAY at Fire & Dust event Poets Zoom Around The World. Highly recommend!!

I discovered Fire & Dust during Spring 2020, and found some of the most engaging, thought-provoking, funny, sad, etc writers I'd ever heard. Indeed, Raef Boylan and I, along with Amina Rose (also an open mic host) ended up pulling together the anthology "Geography Is Irrelevant" based on the work of zooming poets.

This will be an excellent evening, anchored by a sure-to-be brilliant set by Laurence. Be there or be square.

*York lured Laurence away from Coventry.... Hee hee

This TOTALLY made my day, week, month, year. Spent a vibrant Thurs evening with Girl Guides, presenting (one of!) my job(s) to a rotating group. I had 7 or 8 books laid out on the table; was one everyone picked up. I talked about accessibility, how Stairwell Books focuses on making our books as friendly as possible: cream pages, wiiiide space between lines. A girl in one group spotted the italicised font for Bea's handwritten journal, and announced "Miss, i can't read italics". Other 2 heads nod. I ask "Yeh, but can you read THIS?" and find a passage from Bea's journal. Three sets of eyes widen: "Yes!" they all exclaimed. Success!! We spent weeks fiddling w fonts, on the hunt for the perfect one that says "handwritten diary" but also is readable. Good job, Alan Gillott! Phew, Ali Sparkes - we done did it! (btw all of the girls found readable too; as were all our KS2 books). Ta to Charli for the invite.

Book cover. Has 100 centred at top and SUMMERS under that. Scene shows an imposing mansion at night, lots of chimneys and gabled windows, a very tall tower on the right side of the house, clouds behind the house, the edges of trees at both sides of the image. There is an owl silhouetted over the full moon, which is inside the second zero of 100. Almost every window is dark except for one. One bedroom light is on, glowing yellow, and there is a person in the window. There’s a moon-brightened lawn in the foreground, surrounded by a wall, with a stone statue that has a flat top with something in the middle, to the left of the lawn along the wall. In front of the lawn, a fox stares at the house. At the bottom, in white letters over the bushes, it says Ali Sparkes.
