Somerset Arts and Culture Diversity Forum
Supporting the creativity of older people in Somerset - what more can we do?

How can we better understand and respond to the creative needs of older adults? In what ways can participation in creative activities enhance mood, support cognitive and physical wellbeing, and reduce social isolation? And how might an artist’s practice evolve with age - both in terms of process and perspective?
This is an opportunity to hear from older people themselves as well as artists and organisations whose work is informed by them.

The session will begin with presentations followed by discussion and networking.

Somerset Art Works, Somerset Film and Take Art are working together to deliver this forum, which aims to have honest discussion, share experiences and provoke individual and collective action.

If you are an older person who would like to share your perspective, or someone who works with older adults—whether as an artist, educator, care worker, or arts professional — we warmly invite you to join the conversation.

The Arts and Culture Diversity Forum Somerset champions diversity and equality in the arts in Somerset. Facilitated by Take Art, Somerset Art Works and Somerset Film, it represents a safe space for us all to talk honestly, share experiences and best practice, challenge perceptions, and provoke individual and collective action.

This month our Arts Engagement & Outreach team are celebrating support received from Somerset Community Foundation and Somerset Activity & Sports Partnership (SASP) who have generously supported both our Octagon Memory Choir and summer activities, from our summer schools to our PlayDays. The support from SASP for our summer activities enables us to offer fully subsidised places for young people in receipt of Free School Meals as part of Happy Healthy Holidays Somerset over the summer holidays. Where funding from Somerset Community Foundation has enabled us to increase the provision of our Octagon Memory Choir, with sessions throughout the year. Plus, we are celebrating the support received of the past year from our wonderful volunteers, who have generously donated 6,272 hours of their time in support of our shows, events and participation classes.

Welcoming all teachers to join us for a chance to exchange creative ideas and resources with peers from local primary & secondary schools over tea/coffee & cake at Westlands Entertainment Venue. This is a safe space for teachers to network with others in the area and have their say and input into our Education Programme.

WE’RE RECRUITING an Arts Engagement & Outreach Officer to join our team! 🎭

Salary: £28,598 - £32,061 per annum FTE
Hours: 3 days per week (22.2 hours per week)

We are seeking to recruit to our role of Arts Engagement & Outreach Officer to help improve the lives of people in Somerset. Your day-to-day work will involve:

🤹‍♀️Planning, facilitation and delivery of activities as part of Arts Engagement & Outreach programme at The Octagon Theatre & Westlands Entertainment Venue and across Somerset.
🎭Lead on delivery of our Talent Development & Artist Support programme, including work experience programmes, career talks and events, community projects, masterclasses, artist mentoring, performances, and wider offer as appropriate.
🎤Developing partnerships and collaborating with a rich network of artists, creatives, facilitators, practitioners, teachers, regional and national arts organisations and companies to programme enrichment opportunities as appropriate.
🩰Developing the Octagon Theatre and Westlands Entertainment Venue as cultural hubs and supporting the Arts for Health & Wellbeing, Creative Learning & Education, Participation, Talent Development & Artist Support programmes across Somerset, with schemes to improve inclusion and remove geographical, social, economic, physical and psychological barriers to access.
