✨ Art by Night – What a Night! ✨

Yealmbridge Mill was glowing last Friday night as we welcomed 12 incredible artists under one roof… and we are thrilled to share that 7 of them sold artwork on the night, with 13 pieces sold altogether!

In times where the world feels financially tight, this is a powerful reminder:
Art is still being bought. Art is still being loved. Art is still finding its way into people’s homes.

To everyone who came, who supported, who believed in the magic of creativity, thank you. You made the night unforgettable

Art by Night is only just getting started… and we can’t wait to showcase the next wave of talent at Yealmbridge Mill.

Stay tuned. Something beautiful is always on the horizon 🌙🎨

🎨 Welcoming Back: Jill Annfield

We are thrilled to welcome Jill Annfield back to Art by Night this year! As our only returning artist, stepping in after a last-minute cancellation, Jill was first on our wait list, and for good reason. Her work captivated audiences last year, and we’re delighted to showcase her extraordinary paintings once again.
Jill’s distinguished artistic journey spans decades, continents, and creative disciplines. She trained at Hereford School of Art before progressing to St. Martin’s School of Art and Chelsea School of Art. Her early career saw her making her mark as a fashion artist, producing work for Vogue, The Daily Telegraph, The Daily Mail, and other major publications.
Her career expanded dramatically during her years in Africa, where she embraced full-time painting, co-founded a graphic art agency in Kenya, and contributed editorial illustrations to The Times of Zambia and The Star in Johannesburg.
Upon returning to London, Jill exhibited widely, beginning with the iconic Crane Kalman Gallery in Knightsbridge, followed by Piers Feetham and Russell Galleries in Fulham and Putney. Her creative path later took her to southwest France for three years of painting, before settling in the beautiful village of Noss Mayo, Devon, where she continues to create her atmospheric and distinctive works.
Jill is celebrated for her evocative acrylic paintings of lone houses, churches, trees, and expansive landscapes, compositions filled with mood, quiet drama, and a dreamlike sense of place. Her work is held in private collections across Africa, the USA, France, and the UK, and she is a longstanding member of both The Chelsea Arts Club and the Chelsea Art Society.

✨ We’re so pleased to have Jill Annfield back at Art by Night, come and experience her compelling work once more!

🎨✨ Meet the Artists: Rockdale Art Club
Jayne • Kairen • Helen

Since September 2019, these three friends have gathered every Thursday afternoon for what they lovingly call “Prosecco Art.”
A glass of Prosecco, a catch-up, a good “put the world to rights” then the painting begins. Over the years they’ve explored oils, watercolours, acrylics, paper-making and even Christmas crafting. Their sessions have become so joyful that many have asked to join!

Jayne (Yealmpton) was the driving force behind forming R.A.C. After deciding she wanted to paint, without formal lessons, she began creating pieces she’d want in her own home. She’s completed commissions and even had a painting shown and auctioned at Cheltenham Racecourse.

Kairen (Newton Ferrers) is the club’s “abstract queen.” She loves large canvases, bold colour, shape and texture, and has sold her work at various local shows.

Helen (Yealmpton) paints abstract fish, landscapes, colourful meadow splatter pieces and serene underwater scenes featuring fish, jellyfish and rays.

Not professionally taught, the trio describes art as their therapy, even continuing together over Zoom during lockdown. They’ve held their own shows and raised hundreds of pounds for Alzheimer’s Society, Diabetes UK and The Mustard Tree Macmillan Cancer Support Centre.

We can’t wait to showcase the wonderful work of Rockdale Art Club at Art By Night — Friday 21st November, 6–9:30pm.

🎨 Meet the Artist: Jayne Ashenbury
Local artist | Colour enthusiast | Educator

“I love playing with colour! I love celebrating the fact we’re alive! I love what I do!”

Jayne Ashenbury embraces colour through a variety of mediums and surfaces, from large bespoke murals painted directly onto the walls of beautiful homes, to drawing tiny buildings (and lots of flowers!) on watercolour paper, and everything in between. She has dabbled with abstract landscapes inspired by her local world, and even created gorgeous velvet cushions printed with her own designs. Jayne is delighted to be loving every minute of this exciting arty journey.

Her love of painting was rediscovered during lockdown, after finding a box of watercolour paints in a drawer. Although she studied both art and drama at school and university, she took the drama route, teaching for 20 years at Plymouth College. Today, she feels lucky to have the time and energy to pursue her passion for painting, constantly learning and developing her skills, inspired by artists she is in awe of.

Alongside her own creative practice, Jayne loves inspiring new artists to find their creativity and develop their skills while having fun along the way. She runs regular art classes, bespoke workshops, and art residentials.

🎨 Meet the Artist: Kathy George
Animal Portrait Artist | Photorealism | Dartmoor-based

Kathy George is an artist who creates highly detailed animal portraits from her studio in Dartmoor National Park.
Her creative journey began about five years ago. She first worked in watercolour, but the need to capture the grace and elegance of her three whippets called for a medium with finer control, a search that led her to coloured pencils.

Kathy specialises in photorealism and is known for her meticulous detail. She works on two very different surfaces:

✨ Drafting film - used for maximum sharpness and clean lines, allowing intense colour layering and precise detail.
✨ Pastelmat paper - chosen when she wants a softer and more textural finish.

Her work focuses on bringing out the character of each animal, especially the individuality in their eyes and the subtle variations in fur texture.

A highlight of her recent work was supporting the breeding programme for the critically endangered Amur leopard at Sparkwell Zoo. After hearing about their conservation work, she created an Amur leopard portrait that was auctioned to raise essential funds for the project.
